When you write your personal essays and it says they want you to write about what they should know abou you do they like if you sound a bit conceited in your essay because i can not really describe myself without using I because otherwise if i use she i'll sound like smeagle from the Lord of the Rings. =D

I know they have to read constant essay about kids who talk about themselves but how else can u talk about yourself?

For one of the essays, it may help to write as a third-person omniscient narrator. And then be daring. Reveal something personal about yourself...because the omniscient narrator knows!

Park8 - The Deerfield essay is to tell your potential **ADVISOR **what they should know about you. That may be a different slant (actually it is a very different slant in my son's).

Hey park, I wrote an essay for Deerfield too and I pretty much talked about everything about my life. They did say that you should include your hopes, goals, and expectations. But beyond that, you should talk about your personality, likes and dislikes, etc. The hard thing about this (for me) is that it’s an open-ended essay so there is no specific question. What I did was, I had my focus/topic then I branched out and talked about whatever from there. This helped me sound like I was actually bringing them somewhere, and that I wasn’t scatterbrained.

I think what Linda meant was that they don’t expect you to sell yourself too hard. No pressure on that. You don’t have to list down your grades or whatever because honestly, is this really the most important thing your advisor should know about you? They want to go beyond that and focus on the overall person, and not only see the label "student" on your paper. Yes, you could integrate all aspects of your life, which is what I did, but you’re not ASKED to impress them. I think the general image of an advisor is a friend. And an admin... well, they might seem intimidating at first because they are, after all, asked to judge you.

You can be casual if you want, but don't get too comfortable and start using slang. And why are you only doing your essays now? It's due tomorrow!

I think Cate hit the nail on the head. My son also talked a little about the things he knows he needs to work on...things that his advisor will find out pretty quickly anyway. And, they are things that will probably come out in his recommendations.
