Personal printer worth it?

I applied for Fall 2015, so still waiting to hear back, but I like to have things figured out way in advance. Would it really be worth it to bring my own printer to campus? I’m thinking more in the sense that most class assignments/papers might be online, so the benefits of having my own printer/scanner wouldn’t be worth the space it takes up in a dorm room or the cost of buying one. Do most classes allow you to turn assignments/papers in online, or is a physical copy more common to turn in?

TL;DR: if I brought my own printer to campus, would I actually use it?

Yes, printers allow you to print stuff, which is important in college.

I realize that. What I’m asking is if most classes prefer you to turn things in online, rendering a printer useless. I know some people in other universities that hardly ever use their printers.

Yeah, you will need to turn papers that will require printing. Imagine that you’re writing an essay late at night. Your other option that’s less convenient is to use the library or some other place. Or you can “borrow” someone else’s.

@futurepanic‌ did you apply for Seattle campus?

Yes, DEFINITELY bring a printer. I have one and it’s incredibly convenient to have on hand. When you need to print out last-minute assignments or labs, you’ll be glad you didn’t have to run all the way to Odegaard or elsewhere. I store mine on top of my dresser with other school-related stuff. If you’re worried about it taking up too much space, you could always coordinate with your roommate(s) to see who brings it.

Best of luck!

@elitelow Yes, Seattle campus! Thanks for the replies!

I think you just gave me a flashback.

I managed to get a good laser printer for free and it’s been one of the best things I’ve owned.

Teachers are different, but in my experience most of them would ask for hard copies of papers. Printing them at the UW might get quite expensive b/c one page costs around 12 cents.

I also prefer reading something from a hard copy instead of my monitor, so with my printer I am able to printout stuff really cheap. I also like to proofread on paper b/c for some reason I’m usually able to catch more mistakes this way.
