Personal Property Insurance

Although my daughter signed up for the insurance, I am now questioning whether it is worth it? The policy states it does NOT cover THEFT, only burglary and if it is burglary, one must prove that the room was forced in to. I doubt that anyone is going to force her door down in the double locked residence halls. Although her more expensive items, (Laptop & Bike) would be covered under our Home Owners policy, it would not be worth a claim due to deductible and long term affects from making a claim. I skimmed over the policy and will need to do further research, but it seems that it is more of a “loss of use policy” and has some coverage of medical for others.

Has anyone else ever made a claim for personal items? Our interest in a policy would be to insure her personal items are covered, whether it be due to theft or any other situation.

I just checked our CSI policy and it does not mention anything about theft vs. burglary. It says items are not covered for loss. This summer, while at home, our D’s cell phone was stolen and they paid the full replacement cost for an iPhone 5c minus $25 deductible even though the phone that was stolen was an iPhone 4s because the 4s wasn’t available through her carrier.

Did you buy through CSI or another insurance company?

CSI was well worth the money for us, I canot say enough good things about them. I have both a S & D in college (different schools), and my daughter tends to break her cell phones…I pulled the trigger when she used her money to purchase a new MacBook Pro and a 64GB iPhone6 2nd semester, and boy am I glad I did! She got her phone stolen a couple weeks ago at an off-campus restaurant - we know it was stolen because we tracked it moving down the street before it was turned off. Flash forward, and they are reimbursing her full cost PLUS sales tax for the phone & case less the $25 deductable, over $800. I also purchased a rider for my son’s musical instrument, and someone knocked it over doing $100 in damage - they cut a check in his name for $75.

There are some things to be aware of - most importantly. you REALLY need to keep good records like original receipts, etc - for my D they had her send the original receipt (I kept it), her school schedule, the police report, and proof that it was reported stolen to our wireless company. You also need to complete their form with the policy number, police report #, etc. It’s a little bit of a pain but I understand they want to prevent kids from trying to scam a new phone upgrade…so if you’re the type who doesn’t keep the paperwork, it may not be a good idea. Another issue - they cover damage and theft (police report required), but not simply losing something. Also note the process can take a few weeks before you get refunded - they are thorough for good reason, but nice and the follow-up/response times to e-mails and questions are super fast; they send e-mail confirmation when they receive what they need.

BTW I’ve had State Farm for my homeowner’s for years, but I don’t believe they cover damage - and the speed and small deductable is great compared to what I know I’d be dealing with on homeowners. One of the smartest things I’ve done so far was to purchase the insurance from CSI and will most definitely be doing it again.

Just to preempt anyone reporting that this is resurrecting an old thread (which it is), I am going to let this one be an exception. The previous information is still valid, and it is that time of year when people start asking about this topic. So I will not be closing this thread just to start a fresh one on this topic. Starting a second thread on this topic accomplishes nothing useful, specially since this one is not that long.
