Does anyone have or is anyone getting personal property insurance for their sons/daughters belongings? Tulane lists 2 different companies on the move in website. Is it necessary? Worth it? I haven't looked into either policy really, just starting to think about it. Never thought about it for a dorm, off campus housing sure.

We did. Can’t remember the company off hand, but I know I mentioned them in old posts if you do a search. But it was so cheap, and given the deductible in most homeowners policies it seemed like a no-brainer. What are the two listed? Maybe I will recognize one of the names.

College Student Insurance and NSSI

CSI, that was the company we used.

Thanks, going to look into it.

FWIW, we never had to make a claim, but I remember some others saying that they had and the company was extremely responsive and good to work with. That was only a year or two ago.

I’m glad you brought this up, it reminds me to check with my D to make sure she has this in place for Stanford.

We used CSI last year and will use it again this year. My D did have a claim when she broke the screen on her phone. Once we were able to find acceptable proof that the phone belonged to her (couldn’t remember password to get on her Virgin Mobile account to show that she had service on an iphone with them) they paid quickly and easily.

Just signed up online today…thanks for the nudge and helpful information…it was about $130 for the calendar year starting on move in day…35 cents a day…seems like a good thing

I think it’s worth it alone for cell phones and laptops!

while she was in the dorm that was our thinking. Then when she was off campus it was like any renter’s insurance, with better pricing than most.

Thanks for the reminder! Just ordered it from CSI!

I know over the last few years they got a lot of business from here. They owe me commissions!!

Hi - I just contacted my state farm insurance agent and asked her if my D’s Apple computer is covered under my home policy. She says it was. I didn’t ask about her other belongings… they are mostly clothes and stuff. I am really surprised the computer is covered and that’s a big ticket item. You may want to ask your agent if your children’s stuff is coverd under your home insurance (if you have it). Good luck and thanks for suggesting to look into getting insurance.

It’s covered under my home insurance too but we have a pretty high deductible to meet first!

Right - I forgot to mention that. Thanks! She did say that we’d have to meet the deductable first. Well, I’m glad I checked because now I know if she somehow loses her computer (anywhere) then I know it is at least covered via my insurance. Sigh!

I would still suggest at least contacting CSI or a similar company and seeing how much coverage with no deductible would cost. It seemed to me it was so cheap it was worth the few $$ a month just in case. Of course laptops are a lot cheaper now I guess. Haven’t priced them for some time. But when My S first started, at least, and even my D a couple years later, it definitely made sense to cover that kind of stuff separately with no deductible.

I’m pretty sure the deductible for CSI is only like $25? and it would cost me $135 for the year. We are going to sign up for it for sure!
I’d rather not have to make a claim against my home owners!

For us, the CSI coverage cost less than our homeowner’s deductible and covered things that our homeowners wouldn’t like breaking the screen on her phone…multiple times…with only a $25 deductible.

I bought $5000 coverage from CSI for $130 for the year and the deductible on this is only $25! I would prefer not to put in a claim against my homeowners policy and my deductible is very high.

My memory was hazy on the particulars but I knew it was a great deal. Thanks for affirming the details. Once she moved off campus we went to a regular renters policy, so between China and then being off campus it had been a few years.
