Hi Everyone!
I'm currently attending my community college (1st year) and have my goals set on going to a UC for the 2012 Junior year. I have a 3.7 GPA and a declaired major with all pre-reques on the way. Are there any tips/ topic focuses/ appealing aspects etc. I should be aware of to incorporate into my personal statement letter? Please advise!! Thank you!

Get in good terms with one of your english professors. Write out your essays completely when the time has come. When you think its ready to be sent in and you have gone to any workshops to fix it up ask them if they can look it over for you and if they have any suggestions. They’ll be happy to help you get into UCB. After they give you some corrections that would be the time to send it in.

I had to be very economical with my word count, it barely made it with the exact amount of words allowed, basically I had 100+ words I needed to remove without ruining the main content of my two statements. I just went through and changed some of the phrasing and removed anything that didn’t really help. That’s just as far as the peer edit aspect went on my account. Hope it helps.

For content I’m not sure, don’t make it boring at least. Show Berkeley that you will be a unique addition to the campus rather than someone with just plain booksmarts.

make it personal, [not to sound cliche] truly speak from your heart, talk about any kind of hardship that you may have overcome. Don’t just list your accolades, do that in your application. Talk about what you would like to accomplish after you graduate.

Keep it real ; )
