It’s a good headache! Julliard will certainly defer/adjust for a professional engagement - this is what these schools are about after all. Congratulations to you and to your daughter.

I was thinking the same thing, stringfollies. She’d not only pull in some pretty fine bank to cover those expenses that have you worried, she’d get professional experience that couldn’t be touched in the classroom. Talk to Julliard, tell them the circumstances, and have her go where life leads her. Congrats to her!

Thanks everyone! She has not been accepted in the tour yet…but she did meet with the production team. Who knows when the young lady in that role will leave…I am betting on August (right after we make our first tuition payment probably)…it will have been a year that she has been on tour. Then MAYBE, just MAYBE, the phone will ring and they will offer her the role. If not, no harm, no foul. She got to audition and have a great time doing it! And, she still gets to go to Juilliard! Thank you again for the kind words!

I would say save the $$ for her Masters…she has great undergrad choices, but there is no reason to put ur family into financial insecurity for the next 4 yrs. Take the best deal you can for undergrad, and look towards the dream school for her masters. Thats just my take on it, having a son graduating from Oberlin in May. I think that many of these schools will offer her great advantages…she will likely get into her dream studio for her masters…so, though you have some good and great schools to choose from…in this economy, I’d pay close attention to the finances.

The one thing that isn’t clear to parents of incoming freshman, is…though they factor in room/board/tuition, blah blah…they fail to factor in, transportation back and forth for breaks, extra things such as studying abroad…and the out of pocket expenses required for that…the clothes, the this and that…honestly, my checkbook has a burn mark on it!! I’m glad at least my son went where he had an excellent scholarship…(though not the best one offered).

Mind you this is all hindsight:)…I wish your daughter luck…such a fun/stressful/confusing/exciting time!! For Mom too…lol

I have one question. Am I assuming that your daughter is classically trained and is planning on majoring in VP at Julliard? If so, have you spoken with her intended teacher at the school about the possibility of the tour? The voices utilized are very different and it may be that the teacher/school might not think that the show would be the proper thing to pursue… Certainly wishing you both all the best, but I would want to cover all of the bases before signing on any line.

Have to agree with Mezzo’sMama here. Not so sure the a classical VP Julliard studio will be supportive of deferring a year to go on a rock based MT tour the way a MT studio would. DD’s teacher is very strict about the types of MT singing she does, and it certainly is not any of the songs in Spring Awakening. Maybe Lorelei has more insight into this but I would it approach it with studio teacher. Best of luck.

It is a conversation to have with Edith Bers ASAP.
