What's up y'all. I just transferred to New Mexico Tech for PetE this semester, and I have to say that I am shocked at just how few of our students (around 250 total students in the program) are getting internships for next summer. I've only heard of a handful getting one, and many people with very strong GPA's and communication skills are being passed over. I'm just wondering, how are the internship numbers at other petroleum programs?

I’d stay it is starting to become pretty cutthroat. I still don’t think it is hard to get an internship, but the amount of work required is definitely increased. I’d say for someone with a reasonably good GPA (over 3.2) that has no experience would need to talk with ~40 companies to have a good chance at an internship.

The students I talk to that don’t have an internship didn’t try hard enough. For my junior year career day I probably spent close to 20-30 hours in preparation and spent 8 hours straight talking to companies. Fortunately it paid off because I had an offer before I started my senior year.

I got an internship this semester, but I had to interview with 14 companies to get 2 offers… its getting more competitive than ever because of the influx of petroleum students coming in.

Only 3 of the people I know have gotten one and 2 of those are girls, which usually have an advantage because of their low numbers

The pay is hella good though

My school has had a grand total of about maybe 15 oil companies recruit through our career fair and through our online career connect. We have only had 4 companies actually interview students, and I landed 2 interviews, one on which I’m still waiting to hear back on. At our school, it is not a matter of just working hard to get one… in fact I’m not sure what it is a matter of other than lack of volume. I’ve got a 3.6 GPA with two summers left to go, but I’ve heard of only 2 students getting internships, and one seemed like a diversity hire (no offense intended). I’d just like to see how other school’s are doing, because I’m about to take a road trip and go to these companies door-to-door even though it is late in the year

Companies just want positive people with leadership skills, I currently have a 4.0 at my university and I struggled, its all about how you perform during the interview and how good your competition is

Going door to door might work for rough necking but not for getting an internship

Well at this point, with seemingly no more companies coming to my campus, I think going on a road trip to try to hand resumes to HR people of small-midsize companies face to face is my only shot. I need to increase my opportunities to increase my chance at landing an internship. Anyone else out there from other petroleum schools have anything to share? I’m just trying to get a feel for how people are doing around the country internship-wise

There are a lot out there, but there are a lot of petroleum students now. I go to LSU, and have just been spending summers roughnecking either on land or offshore. Have had a few interviews, but no offers. They may interview 12 people while the only have 1-2 actual openings. Just keep applying, eventually you’ll find something.

It’s getting tougher as the market becomes more saturated with PEng Grads. It seems like all the Petroleum engineering majors at my school who entered in 2009 got 100K+ full time offers as long as they had above a 3.2/3.3 GPA. Now, even getting internships is getting more cutthroat.
