Phase I/II without CalSo

Because I'm OOS and some other factors it's very difficult for me to come to freshman CalSo :(. I'm planning to take Math 53 & CS 61A 1st semester, along w/psychology 1 & another breadth. Here are some of my concerns:

1) Am I in danger of being "crowded" out of any of these, in particular 61A?
2) What should I phase 1/phase 2?
3) I've heard no CalSo = late phase 1 = late phase 2. Do I get a clean slate when signing up for 2nd sem. of freshman year?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I face a similar hitch. I was planning to not go to CalSo at all because the only sessions I am physically able to attend are the last two. Any input on this?

I know right. I really don’t think it’s worth it to spend 300 bucks + whatever the travel fare is to go to register almost-last. What’s your major?

You’ll get a normal scheduled telebears appointment for your second semester.

I wouldn’t go for $300 + airfare. It was only like $170 3 years ago, crazy stuff.

Good to know I won’t be screwed over 2nd semester!

Yeah my parents got pretty upset about the $300 + airfare lol. They basically told me to only go if I knew I couldn’t take one of my major pre-reqs or something. That’s why I was wondering about CS 61A and stuff.

You’ll be fine. That’s what Phase I / Phase II are for. If you Phase I 61A, you’ll have no problems getting in. You’re still extremely likely to get in if you Phase II it due to size expansion and the number of people who drop.

You don’t really need CalSO – it’s really just a social icebreaker so you’ll have a couple of friends/acquaintances during your first day.

Even after I graduated, I still keep in contact with a couple friends I met during CalSO.

That’s a relief; I’m assuming it’s the same way with Math53 as well?

As far as meeting people I do feel kind of sad about not having that initial opportunity. But I just can’t justify paying so much money to fly out there for only that reason. And I’m sure I’ll make friends once I’m there in August.

Out of these classes, which ones should I phase I?
math 53
chem 112A
music 128
anthro R5b
bioE 10

That’s the way to look at it; any reasonably social person will have plenty of opportunities to make friends. CalSO is just one of those.

In terms of Phase I – use it for the classes you need most. That is, the classes with the most requisite chains. That way, your long-term plans are least affected if TeleBears doesn’t work out the way you want. If you don’t get into another class that you don’t really need immediately, you can just take it another semester.

In my personal experience, though, in my eight semesters here, I’ve never had a time where I was truly screwed over by TeleBears. I’ve had to experience several waitlists, but they almost always worked out. I’m an engineer (particularly EECS) though, so that might affect things.

Hey guys, I have few questions:
In order to register for classes, what information do you need?
If I choose not to attend CALSO, can I request them to send me those information by email? When will I receive it?
Because my family and I will go back to Asia for the entire summer, and I will not be back until mid August…
Also, do I need to use Phase1 to sign up college writing R1A, or should I wait it till phase 2?
