Phi Beta Kapa chapter at Miami?

I'm aware there is a Phi Beta Kapa chapter at Miami. But I'm curious, what are the requirments for it? And about how many get it each year? Is it brutally competitive?

kappa, not kapa…
elections to PBK are not really something you can apply for, and it would be as a senior, so in all likelihood you shouldn’t be worried about this. It looks like you’ll need to be in the top 10% of the class or have a gpa above a 3.75 or something for consideration. I would assume it’s competitive, as that seems implicit in the description, but no idea as to how many get it each year. BTW, it’s not the highest award at UM. That distinction belongs to the iron arrow society if you wanna dream big ; )

You can actually get initiated as junior, I’ve had friends become a part of PBK at Miami their junior year. As far as invitation goes, I’d say you need to definitely be one of the top in your class. Depending on school and major, it simply varies, due to grade distributions and rigor of course work. Like for Business majors, I’d say you would need to have about 3.9 GPA at least to be considered, since grades are heavily inflated. For sciences like Biology, it might be more toward the 3.7-3.75 range.

Though as someone mentioned, Iron Arrow is the most selective and biggest honor that you can receive at the University of Miami. Grades are very important, but you must have strong leadership and truly made a difference and impact at Miami during your four years (or however long you were there).

Sorry BJ, but going to have to wave the Bovine Scatology flag on your “input.” Phi Betta Kappa is only for College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) students, not for students who are business majors within the School of Business Administration…The honor society for business students at UM is Beta Gamma Sigma.

It is a similar policy at UNC-CH, with business students needing at least 90 CAS credits to be even considered.

Oh BaghDAD, I’m afraid I forgot to mention that my friend who was inducted junior-year was a Political Science major and will actually graduated this May and move onto Miller School of Law.

BJ,

Poli Sci students can be in the SBA, however the department resides in the CAS, hence PBK.

A finance, accounting, management or marketing major, the core majors of the SBA are eligible for Beta Gamma Sigma only.

At any rate great news about your friend, however Miller is the MEDICAL SCHOOL, not the Law school…

Thank you guys for what you’ve said. But is there a specific GPA that puts you in the range for Phi Beta Kappa. And I’ve heard at other colleges there are specific level classes you must take and a foreign language componet. I could not locate such requirements at Miami, do they exist? Also, what are some other honor societies besides Kappa and the Iron Arrow? Do Latin honors exist at Miami and what GPA do you need to graduate with them?

Bigworld,

Here it is for Latin honors…Yes, it has gotten tougher starting this year, the GPAs have gone up for summa and magna:

General honors is located here:

Iron Arrow is a whole different issue, a lot of leadership and intangibles go into the selection process.
