Phi Theta Kappa ??

Is anybody enrolled in Phi Theta Kappa? It's an honor program.

How does it really work? do the classes you take in that program count toward your transfer?

Is it worth taking?

I'm in PTK. It's an honor society not an honors program, in my school anyways. They have some decent scholarship opportunities but to be honest its just something to put on my app like being on the Dean's List.

oh, i see. So it's more like an EC than academic enhancement.

is there any honor program(honor classes) for community college student?

It depends on your community college. Talk to a counselor there they should be able to tell you. What CCC do you go to? Maybe you have fellow students here.

I'm attending san jose city college now.

I met a counselor ( who does not seem know much about anything. I believe she is new.)this morning, and I asked about an honor gropram. And she told me to go to student life center, so I went there and was offered the PTK information. At that time I had no idea that it's not an honor's program for honor classes, which was what I meant to ask the counselor. Since they did not mention about honor classes, maybe we don't have it here for cc?

What does this mean? It's the info under PTK on san jose city college's website for honor's program.

The Honors Program offers:

A challenging curriculum designed specifically for the Honor student
The option of working with a distinguished Faculty member in developing a challenging Honors Contract for a transferable level course.
Individualized counseling and academic planning
Designated Honors status on their academic transcript

Gattacamz, I think the information you provided is a description of your school's honors program. Most schools generally have PTK and their honors program under the same category but regardless, they are two different programs. PTK is essentially a club; honors program is a program.

From what i heard, PTK doesnt really matter much unless you have a leadership position for what it's worth.

haha ya i was wondering if i should join PTK or not.. i was just gunna do it for my transcripts :P

Yeah I probably wouldn't have joined but my school paid the application fee ($5). PTK really does its damnedest to convince you to buy PTK-branded crap. Most of their emails goes straight to the trash but they do have some scholarships so I stay subscribed.

I was invited to join, but the $75 join fee turned me off. There's really no point. My transcripts speak for themselves. I would not mind joining Phi Beta Kappa, though...

Actually, I has the same questions about PTK. I talked with 2 seperate counselors who told me the exact same thing. They say many people join it, just to put it on the transfer application, but those who actually take active roles such as officer positions get a kudos when your application is reviewed. Anyways the initiation fee is 75$, but then you have access to over $35,000,000 in scholarships, so even if you get one it more than pays for itself.

PTK and the honors program is different. PTK gives you special offers as a member, the honors program involves honor courses. Some schools combine the two and reward certain transcript notations.

Join for the looks not for the opportunaties.
