Thoughts??

That's an interesting one.....IMO, Merrill is much more journalism oriented while Newhouse is much more communications oriented....really depends on what your intended major within the school....Broadcast Journalism would have to go to Newhouse (alumni are all over the country), Print Journalism/Newspaper etc. might go to Merrill......

If you have been accepted at both, you need to visit to determine preference....

My d applied (accepted) to Newhouse, but didn't consider Merrill.....not enough marketing communications based for her......

They're both good schools so I think it depends on which you think is a better fit for you. Personally, I think I'd give a slight edge to Newhouse though I think for most non-journalism areas I'd choose UMCP.

Have you visited? My first son was very excited by a new program at Syracuse, the Bandier Program for Music. (My current HS senior is journalism- bound). First son loved everything about Syracuse on paper, but when he went to visit with my husband, they changed airline tickets and returned home the same day. Wet, freezing cold and not nice city (more like an old town). Have to really like ice, cold, wind and snow.
Current college freshman decided on UMD. Second son looking at Journalism there and at USC (have not heard yet) Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, but is interested in Broadcast. We just visited UMD yesterday and have new 'newsrooms' renovated and ready for Fall '08, but new building for Journalism not until 2010. UMD has separate schools for Journalism and Communications.

thank you for the responses. I want to go into broadcast.

Keep the replies coming!!!

I too was considering both of these schools. I was admitted to Merrill and waitlisted at Newhouse, but I had already made up my mind before I learned I was waitlisted at Newhouse.

I went to the admitted students open house yesterday at Maryland and the whole day was focused within your specific school, so I got a lot of good information about Merrill. One of the most significant factors about Merrill is that it is a small college which is part of a large research university. While at the open house, students talked a lot about the family feel to Merrill. Class sizes are smaller than in any other college at Maryland with the maximum capacity being 18 for a skill class and 35 for a theory class. The faculty gets to know their students personally. The faculty includes 7 Pulitzer prize winners and most are still active in the journalism field which keeps them up to date with whats going on in the field.

The proximity to both Washington D.C. and even Baltimore provides students with tons of internships. Merrill students are actively sought after for internships because employers know the quality of the school. The curriculum is very hands on and students learn all the production aspects of a newsroom. The students at the open house mentioned that employers at internships often looked to them first to get things done because they were well versed in all aspects of reporting as well as production.

Apparently this focus is not as strong in other schools including Syracuse and students at these schools are not even allowed to handle equipment until after their sophomore year.

Again this information is all of the main points which were discussed by faculty and students at the open house yesterday. I feel that Maryland is a better school for what I am looking for. I hope I was able to help some. Feel free to pm me if you want to.

Good information! My son will be in Merrill next year. He's undecided about which media, but thinks he doesn't want to do broadcasting.
