Phillips Academy Summer Session

Has anyone been to, applying to, or going to attend Phillips Academy Summer Session?

Hi! I went to Andover Summer Session last year. What are your questions?

Great! How are the academics? Do you get much free time? How is the sense of community? Are you or do you feel inclined on going back again?

The academics are great. It really depends on the major and minor you choose to take. But all of the courses are hard! Even my friends who were in the Dance major had a lot of work. The teachers are great and you get a fair amount of homework every night. But if you manage your time well you can get a lot of free time. For example, last summer here was my typical day:

Wake up: 7:00
Head to Commons for breakfast: 7:30-8:00
Major Class: 8:15-10:00 (I think? I can't remember but it was like a two hour period)
Milk and Cookies: 10:00-10:30 (A time to meet up with friend chat and have a mid-morning snack)
10:00-12:00 (again not sure) Minor Class
12:00-7:00 (pretty much free time)
7:00-9:00 (Study hours)

They hav a LOT of fun activities both on campus and off that you can participate in and you will almost feel like most of your time is taken up already. But with fun things. They have things like mall trips, whale watching, swan boat tours, amusement parks and carnival tours. You make friends really fast and all of the house counselors are really nice. needless to say it was the best summer experience I ever had and I still talk to friends i've made from all over the world- from Greece to Turkey to China and all over the US. If I could I would go back every year! I hopoe you apply and go! It will be a great experience- I promise!

Thanks. I also sent you a PM.

Hi, I was just wondering, having applied to Phillips:
1) Is it really 4 and a half hours of HW per day? That is MIND-BOGGLING.
2) About the afternoon activities, are they just for fun or are they meant to be taken seriously? Did you ever manage or saw someone manage to avoid them?
3)Are the classes done in an informal or formal atmosphere? Are there exams at the end of the 5 weeks?
4)In the weekends, when you venture out of campus, do you have plenty of things to do in Andover? Is it a small area?
5) Are the rules about the lights out actually followed?
6) Does every class have HW? Even my lazy friend who picked Photography as a Major?
7) Do you often go on trips? How about shopping? (So I'm a girl who likes retail therapy, sue me :D)

I plan on going there, is the money put in there better than going to another institute through the state u that is cheaper?

Hey, have you already applied? 'Cause if you haven't, it's going to be hard tp get in right now..
