Phillips Exeter Academy Admissions

Hi guys, I just received an e-mail from PEA and I wasn't admitted. This was really hard for me because I had really hoped that my credentials would be sufficient enough to win me admission. I was in the 94% overall for girls in the 9th grade that took the test in the past 3 years. I've only had approx. 3 b's in my schooling career. I had thought my interview went pretty well, though I'm second guessing myself now. I also feel that my essays were pretty good. I'm in accelerated classes for both math and science, which is all my school provides, and I made it into AP English for next year. I play four sports and I'm in a writing club, a volunteering club, a drug resistance club, and my church's Youth Minitstry. I'm just so upset because I don't know what else I could have done. I don't want this to seem like I'm trying to get attention or brag or anything like that, I just want some feedback from people who have experience with this school. What about me wasn't good enough? What could I have improved on? Is there a way I could get feedback from the school? Thank you so much for helping me in any way you can.

does this belong in college admissions or that other prep school admissions section…

The one thing that could be bad was the interview, all else was above-average to excellent. Also your essays and recs might not have been good

light10491: You don’t have to be a dououche about it.

To the OP: I’m really really sorry…I really understand what you mean. I was rejected from ALL the private high schools I applied and it was such a sad day for me. I did end up transferring, but some of my brightest friends (who were also denied everywhere) stayed in their public school. They’re now at Yale, Duke, and Columbia. And now I’m at MIT.
It doesn’t matter or didn’t in the long run!! Take this is a practice to college admissions.
You’ve got four years ahead of you and make sure you do even more to get into successful colleges like my friends.

Good luck and don’t be disheartened.

MrPrince, I appreciated your encouraging words to Yorkgirl but the point of going to a school like Exeter is not to gain admission to an elite college. It would be much easier to coast through a public school with straight A’s and not have to endure the rigor of a top prep. You are competing with all other Exeter students for admission to the top colleges. This is counterproductive to college admission overall as it is easier to be a valedictorian at a top public than be in the top quartile at Exeter,Andover or any othe top prep. These schools are filled with kids who would have all been vying for the top spot at their publics and private day schools etc.

The only good reason for attending a top school like Exeter is that you desire the best secondary school education possible. I would argue that going to Exeter for four years is a more valuable experience than you would receive at any college or university in any event. It also opens many doors similiar to college networks.

If you are trying to game the college admission process (Top LAC or HYPSMC) stay in a less competitive public school and get a 4.0 GPA with AP’s and/or an IB program and study for decent SAT’s (2100 or above).
