What do you think is the intention behind our existence? Discuss. Thanks :)

What do you think OP? Please support with enough examples and trace how you got from one point to another. Thanks. :)

None. The only meaning of existence is what we choose to make of it. Attributing a meaning to a higher power or the like is a cop-out.

(Isn't it great when high school kids tackle Big Issues?)

totally empirical.

I don't know but I doubt you would find the meaning of life in forums dedicated for teens/parents who have no clue about thier future.

Purpose is unknown.

A better question to ask is how to live a good life. Pretend you have died and ask yourself if you would be happy with the way you lived so far. If not, change what you would have to do to get there.

I agree with the latter part of pyroclastic's post. But orangeisland is also correct - the biggest question for almost all of the big names in philosophy is how one is to live a good life and what that means.

How on earth do you get from purpose to intention?

I personally think the purpose of life is to pass on our genes and continue our species. Beyond that I think it is individual's choice of what to make of their lives. I don't think their is one great purpose for all humans to achieve or a grand scheme for our life. It's just there and we make it what it is.

I disagree. That purpose is for viruses, and humans are much more advanced than viruses :)

Sure humans are more advanced than viruses. But wouldn't you agree the human species would be pointless if it wasn't able to pass on its genes and continue? If we died out there would no longer be a purpose. I think humans can make their own purposes and meaning for their life, but that is the one thing all of us have in common: we have the opportunity to pass our our successful genes to our future relatives.

What do you think the "purpose" is then, if I may ask?

That is characteristic of ALL living things, and not a purpose IMO.

The intended (or not) role of each individual on earth.

But it still is a purpose.

I'll say I agree with you on the second one. I don't know if the roles are intented or not. But I would say that the roles people end up playing or are "destined" to play would be their purpose. Is that what you meant by that?

Yes, thanks for the clarification.

No problem

I think we generally mean the same things.

define existence

I mean:
Why are we alive? Why were we created? Do we each have a mission in our lives?

You should all read Sophie's World..

The most ANNOYING book ever.

what is it about?

it's basically a history of philosophy in novel form. And yes, it is annoying.

The purpose of our existence is to take whatever gifts we have and achieve the most we can with those gifts.
