Philosophy 12a: Logic

Has anyone here taken this class? I am most interested in hearning about the differences in the possible teachers of this class. Also, has anyone experienced or heard anything about professor Warren?

I want a demanding (but not killer) logic class that is interesting and well taught, and am curious if Warren would do this in the eyes of previous students (or friends of previous students). Thank you!

Anybody???

Friend took the class, but it's quite a bit of work with the proofs. It's almost like Math 55.... However, what you gain from logic is quite fun and interesting. I only covered a bit of the things in 12A by taking 25A (not a logic class), but it seemed quite fun.

Warren is a horrible teacher. Don't take him.

In what way is he a horrible teacher? Are you alone in this view, or do many of the people in the class agree? Is his class too easy, too difficult?

I've only heard about him. From what I gather, he's a very bad public speaker and is literally afraid of his students. His classes have no organization. Avoid at all costs.

I'm in Philos 12A with Mancosu. Awesome teacher and great material.

S is currently taking Philos 12A with Mancosu. He has also taken Math 55. According to him, if you do well with critical mathematical thinking, it is not difficult (at least that is the case halfway through the semester). Here's a link to info on the book they are using http://www-csli.stanford.edu/LPL/. He thinks Professor Mancosu is good - basic and straightforward.

The textbook we use is quite understandable and the software helps a lot in learning the material. Mancosu is engaging. Our midterm is this Monday.

I personally detest mathematics, but with my basic calc experience (AP Calc in high school), I have enjoyed this class immensely. Some creativity is required in proving things, and critical thinking in general is crucial.
