phone interviews

How long does this usually last? Is it expected to be less personal than an actual face-to-face interview? I'm just wondering because lots of people here say theirs last for almost an hour, and mine was...less. I'm pretty scared now, since interviews are supposedly really important and my interview was more on the question and answer type. Had the same problem that olivia had at Choate...shoot. I think I pretty much killed my chance.

Help please. Any advice?

I think it really depends on WHO interviews you. We've had many different styles. For example, most have taken notes when with my son, and then when we go in, they tell us a few of the "highlights" of the conversation they had with him and talk about how their school would fit him. The most recent one however, just said to us "I had a nice conversation with your son, do you have any questions?" (and he had not taken notes) I was surprised and a little worried. But after our standard questions we asked what kind of feedback he got from our son and he opened up some more.
I'm telling you this because I don't think you can say you "killed your chance" based on that. I'm guessing that the person who did your interview has that kind of style - question and answer.
Was it an admissions rep or an alumni rep?

admissions rep...asst. director or something like that. Didnt have an interview with parents, seeing as how I had a phone interview.

Well, I said lots of "yeahs" and "umms". It seems like the interview's being rushed. So I'm just wondering about the difference between phone and in person interview.

Any advice on how to improve my chances? Interview's out, I believe.

Did you leave with some unanswered questions? If so, then I would call back and ask to talk with the same person and ask them.

Was this your Berkshire interview? Mine lasted 15-20 minutes, maybe even shorter.. it wasn't that long, at least it felt quick. I believe I said yeah and umm and awesome too much also, so don't worry. Who interviewed you?

oh wow, now i'm nervous. i have a phone interview coming up!!!!! i think an interview is a pretty critical part of the procedure, but evenn if you completely biffed it (and it dounds like you did just fine) then it doesn't mean your out of the running, if all the other components are really good then you still have a pretty good chance! what school was this by the way?

It was around 20 minutes long...and I think he expected a short response so I never really got to finish answering. I talked fast too (I really talk fast all the time, it's a habit). I guess I'm just disappointed since it didn't turn out to be as good as I imagined.

mochakt and Nelly - sent you a pm to answer your question/s.

Linda - I pretty much asked my questions already. I just wanted to let him know about some other parts of me that won't be shown in the application. Like community service, I'm really involved and I can't really list them all down in the apps. Maybe I'll talk about it in the essay?

Ugh. My phone interview was maybe 20-30 min. All of my in-person interviews went well (my first one was average, not great, but not bad), but my phone interview, IMO, sucked. It is just really difficult when one can't see how the person is reacting. I wouldn't worry too much though. The interview is only one piece. And they KNOW that you may be nervous, so it probably won't hurt.

Haha. Thanks frazzledmaybe. Yeah, it's hard to know what they think about you. It sucks not being able to visit.

do you think schools will be biased about personal vs. phone interviews? cuz i'm kind of worried.

I'm doing phone interviews too. I asked and the admins say that they don't care because they understand that some internationals can't visit. My interviews were maybe around 15-25 mins? Some were really bad, others were okay. Good luck!
