Photography at New York University

Does anyone know about the chances of getting into the NYU photo program. I heard they only take 32 students per year.

So doesn't this mean you already know the chances? :)

RIT has the best photo program.

Seems like too much about engineering there. Not arty.

You are wrong about RIT photography being about engineering (well, unless you are talking about the engineering department).

Can you tell me about RIT

also relating to your other post: RIT is a "medium-sized" school (less than 15000 undergrads which has a strong engineering presence, but is really very comprehensive in its offerings. I will say it probably focuses more on professional studies than liberal arts, but nonetheless everything is available there. They have very good programs in photography, film, and animation. This is probably fitting, since they are in Rochester, NY, which at one time might have been considered the world capital of photography and film (Eastman Kodak). The daughter of a colleague of mine went there to major in photography, changed to animation, and just graduated. You may be right to some degree about the emphasis at RIT- if you think about it, photography is part art and part technology, and the sense I got was that RIT may tend to emphasize the technology part, but not to the exclusion of the artistic aspect. The tuition there is moderate for a private school, and I am told in addition that most successful applicants get grants of some sort, however small. Rochester is not NYC, of course.
Another school that is strong in photography, is more artsy than RIT, and is musch closer to NY is SUNY Purchase. It has the added advantage of being a state school, and even for OOS applicants it is relatively cheap ($11-$12K per year tuition). However, I understand that the photography program is very competitive to get into. Also, with your daughter's academic stats, the rest of the school's academics may not satisfy you- check it out and see.

i attended the summer program for theatre at NYU-- there was a lot of anxiety about getting into the theatre program. by contrast, the photo kids we met said they got the impression that the photo program actively wanted them. i think it's still growing, as opposed to being impossible to get into. but NYU/tisch is so strong in the arts, i bet it would be a great program.

That is great information.

32.... ouch. I've applied to Tisch, not that great a student but my portfolio is strong, so fingers crossed. (you can see some of my work at www.thedailysunrise.com - i seem to be plugging in this link too often here...)

Parsons takes 200 though for direct entry, which is nice ot know since NYU is only THIRTY TWO?!
