Photos Chosen To Be Published In Magazine, Notify Colleges?

Hi CC,

I take photos on my free time and post them on a website. Recently, some of my photos had been selected to be published in a travel magazine and a travel website. In addition, one of my photos was used in a popular travel guide a few months ago.

Should I add a note to my mid-year report mentioning the recent publishment of my photos? I'm hesitant to do so because I've never taken a photography class, and my application does not show any particular interest in photography (no photo related extracurricular activities), so such note would be rather "random." Also, the travel magazine is not huge in America. However, the travel guide that used one of my photos has won accolades from TIME and Washington Post. Thanks in advance!

It can’t hurt imo. So why not?

don’t use the word publishment though…

Haha, right. Thanks Rodney.

Bump, any other thoughts?

Yes, you should notify the colleges about this. Congratulations. I think you should include some of the pictures as well.
Good Luck.

Sure, notify them. It might help and it won’t hurt. But it’s a shame you didn’t include photography as a significant EC. It would have avoided the ‘just got lucky’ award look.

Too many people think a hobby doesn’t count, but if you are serious enough about it to have a website where you post your photos, it’s worth talking about in the application.

Send them an e-mail first introducing your photography activity and then relate your recent award (in the same text).

Tell them what this accomplishment means to you (colleges may be more interested in the impact an award had in you than in the accomplishment itself).

This would probably be the best way to smoothly address the matter.

Thank you all for the response. I will act accordingly!

No, definitely not. Most colleges have a thing against photographers. It will only hurt your chances.
