Congratulations Quarter Finalists! I know I'll be looking forward to the open response exam this week.

So, who took the F=ma exam, and what did you think of it? Better yet, does anyone have a copy of the exam? And it would also be interesting to see what the cutoff score was.

My daughter's school only offers AP Physics B. She has about a 98 average. Is there no chance for her to do well in physics olympiad if she has no physics C?

The next round will test mechanics and electrostatics, and both are covered in Physics B pretty well. Physics C is recommended because it covers more material, but the problems from at least the Preliminary "F=ma" exam are fairly conceptual and enough for those with a strong grasp of the material in Physics B. Even strong first-year physics students have a good chance of advancing in the Physics Olympiad.

I know because there was a confusion between me and another student having two different scores. Only one person with a particular last name made it, and it could have been three different people...it was reduced to two different people because coincidentially i have the same first initial as someone else. The teacher contacted AAPT, and apparently one had a low non cutoff score and one had a higher score above the cutoff...and through reason it was decided that i was the higher of the two...

i just want to take the semifinal exam...i dont really care about the camp too much. SO, i'm asking my friend who made it to physics camp last year to help me w/ mech and electrostatics for the next two days until i take the QF exam.

did anyone else get a letter from aapt that starts:

"congratulations on placing as an AAPT Physics Contest Semifinalist"?

it seems odd, maybe incorrect, since i just took the qf exam monday, two days ago. is that supposed to read quarterfinalist?

also, it says, "to register for the next exam...please go to the following link and complete all information"
is anyone else having problems logging in?

AAPT says that the quarterfinal exams will be graded Friday 3/7. I haven't received a letter like that. Maybe they graded yours quickly? Congrats if so =)

Hi!
hey! does anybody know the estimated cutoff of this year,2010? i think it will be ok as long as we don’t discuss any of the problems. the problems this year is harder than last year. Will the cutoff be lower?

Everyone I spoke with agrees that the problems were more difficult than last year’s. I’m assuming (hoping) the cutoff will be a little bit lower.

HOWEVER. They did take out quarters, so only those advancing to semis will make the cut. Perhaps they intentionally made it harder in order to account for this.

If I understood this year’s rules correctly, they did take out quarters, but not the quarter final award. So, they will probably have 2 cutoffs one for quarter-finalists and one for semi-finalists.

they did take out the quaters, but they still enroll 400 students to the next round. As a result, top400 instead of top200 will be called semifinalists this year. So the cut off will be something similar. By the way, what’s the exact cutoff of last year. wiki only gives the cutoff of 2008…
