Picking an Email

I got my NBM today, and am in the process of picking an email.

Unfortunately, but first choice is taken.

However, the MIT - search options page doesn't show it as taken, which was the only way I knew of to check.

I'm afraid that if I try something, even if I'm not sure of it, the system will take it as my final choice.

Can someone who's been through the process tell me if there is a confirmation page?

Yea there are like two confirmation pages. It will tell you when there is no going back. I just made my email address today. Happy picking.

You can also try to look at web.mit.edu/firstchoice/www to see if a username's taken -- some people keep their email addresses after they graduate because they're still doing stuff for MIT, and therefore do not show up on the directory search, but still keep an Athena locker. (Not that I personally would know anything about this. ;))

you can type it into the MIT people lookup :

MIT - people directory

sometimes people keep lists just for mail and such (those won't show up) and, since any student can make as many lists as he/she wishes, there isn't much you can do about that.

@bballdude: thanks! i'll go try some of my ideas now

@mollie: what site are you exactly referring to?
web.mit.edu/firstchoice/www
won't work for me

@pebbles: that's the site i tried, but the name i wanted (not cuca, that's more a nickname, long story there), but the name i want shows up as not taken but you find out it is taken once you get into the athena system. odd i know

Someone on the MIT facebook group fora suggested typing the email address into Google and it'll come up with hits that don't come up in the directory.

I mean to put the username you're considering in the place where I wrote firstchoice, e.g. web.mit.edu/mollieb/www.</p>

lol. i thought u could make multiple email addresses for MIT =D

and this is one of the reasons why i wanna come here--because you get to create your own email address! :)

Well, OK, you only get one REAL email address, but you can make as many mailing lists with you as the sole recipient (so basically making another email address) as your little heart desires.

It is pretty cool, I have to admit.

And then you can use Thunderbird/Google/etc to SEND from your mailing lists =D

OMG OMG OMG!! awesome
