Pitt-Bradford vs Pitt-Greensburg?

Hi all,

Can someone list the pros and cons of attending Bradford/Greensburg? I am considering a major within the pre-med/health area.

Thank you!

In addition, I am planning to transfer to the Main campus within 1 or 2 years. Thanks again!

Greensburg is much closer to main, and I believe off the top of my head they have more specific relocation programs (rehab, pharm, etc) because of that proximity. Bradford has more specific pre-professional programs listed on their website. Really, if you are planning to transfer into main, it may not matter. I get the impression students generally enjoy Bradford more, but is much more isolated than Greensburg. If you can, you may want to visit both campuses and see what you think of them.

Really, I don’t have a great answer for you.

Thanks! Anyone else? :D

Neither…They are like high schools. You will not get any college experience. Small campus, extremely rural, no school spirit, white dominated. Majority of the students there are main campus rejects. Why are you even considering these two as I see you are from Ithaca, NY not a PA resident. Did you not get into main ? I think its better to go to a community college, save $$ and then transfer to the main rather than attending branch campus. The main campus DOES NOT give any priority to branch campus students when transferring. Source: I have never seen anything on their website stating they give priority. Just go to Ithaca College or any other university you have been accepted to.

If you are forced to choose one from those two, I would choose Greensburg. Its close to Pittsburgh like 35 min drive.

Well I am actually using my brother’s account so I’m not actually from Ithaca… I mean if I can fulfill the requirements listed by the branch campus it’s a guaranteed transfer to Main, am I correct? Thanks again!

The regional campuses are not like high schools. That is patent nonsense. They are similar to smaller lacs like Seton Hill or state system schools like Slippery Rock or Shippensburg; except for Titusville, which is only a two year school. But they are different than Pitt-main in culture, setting, and offerings.

I know many people that preferred to start out at branches because of their smaller setting or to save money. UPJ, UPB, and UPG are decent schools in their own right.

“if I can fulfill the requirements listed by the branch campus it’s a guaranteed transfer to Main, am I correct?”

Completely Incorrect. You are not guaranteed transfer just because you attended branch campus. This isn’t Penn State. That’s why I told you its better to start at a cc.

I would recommend Greensburg over Bradford. Like many have said- it’s closer to main so if you have friends with cars you can come in and hang out in Oakland on the weekend anyway. Also, I have heard of way more people transferring in from Greensburg and Johnstown than Bradford/Titusville. I think the staff at UPJ/UPG is generally better than at UPB/UPT

5 post nailed it. The only reason to attend either of those two is if you get rejected from every college you applied to and you hate community college. You will feel like a second-hand student there.

Wow. Your post caught my eye because I know people at both of these campuses and for that matter Pitt Johnstown. Please do your own research. The misinformation given in some of these posts is amazing. Check into “relocation” at Pitt which seems to be what they call transfering from a regional campus to Main. If at all possible visit, don’t rely on information from strangers. At least call the campus you prefer and talk to someone in admissions if you haven’t already.

While I am also a stranger, I lived in Greensburg for six years and in McKean county where Bradford is located for five years. I have been to both of these campuses many times. I found the campuses to be similar but the surrounding areas are very different. I know people who attend these campuses because they couldn’t get in anywhere else. I also know many more people who attend these campuses because they want to be there. There are many reasons to attend a regional campus. The people I know at these campuses are happy and do not feel like second-hand students. Neither of these campuses are anything like any high school I have ever known. Both Pitt and PSU have requirements that have to be met before you can transfer to Main campus, you need to talk to someone at Pitt to find out what they include. I know for a fact that Pitt engineering majors are guaranteed admission to Main if they complete the required coursework with a GPA of 2.75. You need to talk to someone about this concerning the major you are interested in.

Please, call Pitt and visit if at all possible.

If you are into outdoor activites consider Bradford. McKean County is beautiful but isolated and rural. In the county there is a one screen movie theater in Bradford and a drive in 30 minutes from Bradford. That is it for movies. Bradford has a few fast food/pizza places, a Dairy Queen and a Perkins Restaurant, no other eating places you would have heard of. Bradford is the home of the county’s only Walmart! Look up the Allegheny National Forest. Greensburg/Westmoreland county has much much more and is less than an hour from Pittsburgh.

The OP is pre-med major. Here’s the thing, Penn State guarantees admission to main if you get over a certain GPA but Pitt doesn’t. You enter through the same door as other transfer students from various Universities. This is for pre-med. So, don’t attend greensburg thinking it will be easier to transfer to main.

And what does that do for you? Honestly, if a student is not performing academically at a level sufficient to transfer from a Pitt regional to Pitt main, they have likely have no shot at getting into any medical school in the first place. Neither does a student at a PSU branch that only meets the minimum two-year 2.5 GPA to transfer.

Thank you all for your input. I am asking this because when I received my acceptance to Greensburg, there was an attachment listing all requirements needed in order to transfer to Main so I thought the process’ guaranteed.

Call and ask… get the word from the horse’s mouth. No one here works for Pitt and can answer your question definitively.

Do not under any circumstance go to Bradford. Yes, it’s true both campuses are like high schools but Greensburg atleast is a real campus that is spread out. I was supposed to go to Bradford and I drove 7 hours to see it and it only took me 45 minutes to figure out that I would never go there. It’s a small little campus sitting between two mountains. Literally. The town is also very industrial.
I’m currently an upperclassman at Greensburg and although its not te full college experience they do a great job trying to make sure you get it. Lots if events, fairs, up all nights and if you’re interested in parties you have so many surrounding campuses in greensburg that there’s a party every weekend. There’s St. Vincent, Seton hill, upg and a few others all in the small town of greensburg. Plus, the restaurants and town life is really modern. It can drive you crazy if you don’t have a car but most people aren’t study with rides and there’s a Saturday shuttle that takes you to the movies, mall and market. Yea I still wish I would have transferred after my sophomore year, but you’re king to get more of a college experience at greenaburg than in Bradford. Hands down the campuses alone don’t compare just by the way they look when you first drive up. Plus the dorms are so crowded in Bradford. I couldn’t believe how small the rooms were for two people. At greenaburg however every room that you share is not only double the size but comfortable(except the courts). Also you can have your own room in greensburg and the buildings are really nice. Go to a real school but if you really are torn between greenaburg or Bradford choose greensburg!
