Work Experience

10/2009-01/2010 - Best Buy - 30 hours a week, I sold computers!

My grades were terrible through my first three years, and now that I put my mind to my studies, I'm getting excellent grades, although it may be a bit late. I did well on my ACT, and hope that it will somewhat counterbalance my terrible GPA. I plan to major in either aerospace or mechanical engineering. What are my chances?!

Thanks!

Tough one, your ACT is good but your class rank is in the bottom 14% and your GPA is in the bottom 5% of 2009 Pitt students. PSU is less selective, so you may have a better shot there. Pitt also does not offer aerospace engineering.

It may depend on how early you apply as well, as Pitt does rolling admissions. It is worth a shot.

Yeah, I really screwed up my sophomore year. Does Pitt look at senior year grades? The year that is my last one, I start studying and getting good grades, I was a major slacker before my GPA hit me on my report card.

One other thing, I go to a very competitive high school in PA thats consistently ranked in the USNews top 100. My graduating class of 2011 has 3 kids who got a perfect SAT score. Would that play any factor in admissions?

They do consider improving trends. There is really no way to really know other than to actually submit the application. They proclaim to look at every application individually, so who knows.

you probably have a much better chance at Pitt than Penn State. Your GPA will put you in the non-admit range for PSU main campus. Pitt reviews you as a person, so they will review your upward trend in grades. You can also write an essay and/or personal statement explaining your grades. You might have a chance though I think it may still be a stretch.Make sure you have a back up plan Good luck!
