Pitt Family Weekend 2014

Anyone care to share their experiences from this past weekend?

My wife and I only attended the Friday evening Welcome Reception in the Pitt Student Union and the football game on Saturday.

The reception was a nice event with beverages, snacks and door prizes. The crowd was fairly small so the chance of winning a door prize were pretty good. And all students present received a $5 off coupon from a local pizza shop. We arrived right after having dinner with my son so we can't comment on the food, although it looked very appetizing.

Transportation to Saturday's game was a breeze since my son wanted to get to Heinz Field early. Even from the upper sections, we enjoyed the game (but not the outcome) and the $20 tickets were hard to beat. It was a little chaotic queuing up for the buses back to campus but the line kept moving and we were deposited back on campus without incident.

One thing that was interesting is that both the Pitt Team Store in The Pete and The Pitt Shop on Forbes closed at 6:00 pm on Friday. The could have snagged a bunch of extra cash if they had stayed open late during the weekend. No problem... The Pittsburgh Stop was happy to handle the additional business. For reference, The Team Store offered a 'Buy one, get one 50% off' deal for the weekend.

Any reports on the other events / tours?

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit this past weekend. We did our own thing and went to the museum of natural history which was great! =D> It was also our daughter’s 18th birthday Saturday! She really likes Pitt and seems to be adjusting well.

We enjoyed our time at Pitt for family weekend. We live 6 hours away, so we didn’t arrive until late Friday, but we stil got to see our son that night. Saturday we took advantage of the natural history museum discount passes for family weekend and loved the museum. We didn’t do the football game, but did take part in the ice cream social. Good ice cream, and lots of raffles. We won our lunch for the next day! We saw the men’s soccer game that night, too. Very impressed with the campus and all that it offers. Sunday we did the Phipps conservatory with the family weekend discount. It was hard to leave since we won’t see our son until Thanksgiving, but thankful he is doing well and at a great school. Maybe next year we will come for another weekend when our other kids have a day off and come for a long weekend. I’m so glad we participated in family weekend his freshman year.

We also enjoyed the family weekend. We drove from the Chicago area so it took us about 8 hours. The only official event that we did was the football game. We used Hotwire for our hotel and ended up at a hotel where we could simply park at the hotel and walk to Heinz field.

We love to eat at different restaurants and have been working our way through the top listings in TripAdvisor. On Friday night we ate at Dish Osteria on the south side. It was a fantastic Italian Place. For breakfast we did Pamela’s on campus before going to the game. Saturday evening we ate at Point Brugge Cafe in Shadyside. The mussels there were amazing; so was the Belgian Beer. We ate early, so we found ourselves at the Milkshake Factory on the south side. We finished our weekend with donuts from Peace, Love and Little Donuts in the strip district. Pitt is a university in a great city and we are trying to take advantage of that. On a previous visit we had the “Sunday Supper” at Piper’s Pub on the south side. It might sound like an oxymoron, but that was great English food.

In between eating, we toured (unofficially) many of the nationality rooms in the Cathedral, walked up some the 182 steps from Chevron to Sutherland and just stayed low key.

It was a great visit.
