Placement auditions

My d will be attending the hartt school of music for undergrad vp starting next week and auditions for teacher and ensemble placement are the following week. My question is what do the placement auditions generally consist of? She has reached out to other vp majors at the school to get info, but just wondered if anyone here had any additional insight or information.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I just wanted to say that my son is a junior at Hartt studying music management/jazz bass, and he has been very happy there. I hope your daughter is as well.

I’m guessing she will need to sing a piece or 2, theory test and aural skills if she did not do it at audition, sight singing and piano skills.

No specific Hartt info. As hard as it is, at this point she just needs to relax and tell her own story. If they haven’t given any indication of what they want to hear it should be similar to the audition before, what she has worked on that she thinks show her best qualities and she really likes to sing. Any of the other theory or other skills will just place her where she belongs. That’s a good thing.

My daughter just started at CCM and did the diagnostics (placement audition). She simply sang the original audition songs for the teachers. They use that audition as a starting point and she will need to sing them again at the end of the semester and year and will need to show improvement. For theory they had a test so each student could be placed in the appropriate class. She also auditioned for ensemble for placement in one of the ensembles that CCM has, and she auditioned for the undergrad opera. All that took place in three days. Hope that helps!

Usually, voice students sing different pieces at the fall jury and again at the end of the school year. Rep they come in with has bad habits, like it or not, that are simply a function of their younger age.The pieces that will be assigned/agreed upon with the studio teacher will be worked up specifically for jury presentation. Glad that your D is having a great time, Dradsmom!

@Mezzo’sMama thanks! She really is.
