Placement Exams

so…last week, i overheard a couple of people in my classes talk about how they had to go take placement exams before they start at rutgers in the fall. but i had never heard anything about these exams in the context of BU. [i haven’t actually technically sent my deposit in yet, heh.] but, is this something BU pre-freshmen need to worry about? if so, generally for which classes/& when?

Yea, you need to take a placement exam for math and I think writing during orientation. The math exam can be done online. I didn’t personally take the second exam - because I am in engineering, but there was another exam - I was just exempt from it.

Its not as formal as Rutgers (I am familiar with Rutgers placement exams). You won’t need to go in and take a timed math/writing test (which really aren’t that bad and you can place out of it if you have a high enough SAT score).

i believe that BU has completely taken out the writing test at orientation now because most students place into the first writing course anyway. this may change again this year though.

Yeah, you take placement exams during orientation. It said so in a recent email BU sent out to us.

what’s the placement test for math? i didn’t know that math was required at bu…

lol placement tests at BU? ■■■. I got into CGS do I still have to do one? Can you just not do the tests?

There is a placement test for math that is taken online. However, it only serves to suggest the best course into which you fit. I don’t believe the math department actually records your score. You can sign up for any of the basic math or calculus courses anyway. If you have prior calculus experience, I would recommend MA123. MA121 is much more basic than MA123 and is good if you don’t have much of a calculus background (or if you are feeling lazy).

If you plan on taking a language course, there are placement exams for those which are taken during orientation.

The writing placement exam is also offered during orientation but is required only for students whose first language is not English. It is extremely unlikely that you will not be required to take the freshman writing course, WR100, anyway.

I hope this helps,
Brendon

is it possible that we place out of all placement exams if we got a certain SAT score?

The answer to your question is no, the only placement test you cannot place out of is math [Note that you only take the Math placement test IF YOU are going to take a math course. I received a 780 on the Math SAT and still had to take the placement exam]. You can place out of languages if you have over a 560 on a Language SAT II. There is no English exam, and if there is a 4 on AP Language and Composition gets you out of it. [There was no English exam during my orientation.]

sorry, i haven’t thought about this all in a while, lol. so, i’ll be planning out my schedule during orientation, & i really don’t know what types of courses i’ll be taking, just yet. do i just show up to orientation prepared to take what ever placement tests they tell me to…?

It depends on what school your in. If your in CAS, you will NEED to take a language test, I suggest you determine if your taking either Spanish or French as the placement Test is online. For CAS math I have no clue how they do it, but if your in Engineering the math exam is also online.
