Im an incoming freshmen. I am already bilingual and know another language which is Urdu. Is there a placement test I can take for that on campus when I get there to get out of the language requirement or do they not allow that? Who should I contact if I want to set something like that up so I do not have to take a language next year for the fall?

I found these, which may be helpful:

I would just send them an email to ask if a placement exam in Urdu is offered =).

There are classes in Urdu so I don’t see why a placement test wouldn’t be offered.

D’s boyfriend, though a rising sophomore, has yet to address the language requirement (you have until the end of your sophomore year to complete this). He also is bilingual in a language which I believe is not offered. Then again, maybe he is kind of trilingual since he also studied italian in high school. Anyhow, he is hoping to pass out of the requirement. I swear I remember him saying someone about hoping/expecting to meet one on one with Harvard staff to prove proficiency in his first language. I do not know if this is a hope of his or something that he is aware of as an option. This is something you could check into and see if it is appropriate.

Will I be able to take Urdu as a class in the fall, even though I am already fluent in it?

^Yes, but I don’t know why you would.

The thing is, I am only fluent in speaking it and Ive always wanted to learn to read and write it as it is my native language. And, it wouldn’t hurt to improve more on speaking it better either…In a way, I am trying to build on strengths rather than picking up a totally new language (I hated spanish in high school).
