A few questions: If I do very well on my math placement exam, meaning I get placed in a higher course, does that mean I only have to take that higher math course and I am done? In other words, if I do poorly, does that mean there will be more math courses for me to take at UMass, or does that simply mean I will be put in a math course that fits me better?
ANY OTHER INPUT YOU HAVE, SHARED EXPERIENCES, ADVICE, WOULD BE HEPFUL
How many math courses you need to take depends on your major. For any STEM or Isenberg student, you need to take a specific sequence of CALCULUS courses in order to meet major requirements. So if you place into a lower math class, you will have to take more math classes (like pre-calc before you can take calculus courses) in order to meet major requirements. If you are in a major that doesn’t have any specific math requirements, then it should be enough to take a single math class at any level to meet the R1/R2 gen-ed requirement.
@Violet1996 I’m in the College of Education and want to become a history teacher so I would only need a single math course at any level? Because math is really not my strong suite.
I’m pretty sure that is the case. Make sure you follow up on it though (I need to take math for my major so I had no questions about avoiding math). My friend (who is also in the College of education and wants to teach for a non-technical field) tested out of the R1 requirement with an exemption test and took music theory for the R2 requirement. Basically, my friend managed to not take a single math class here.
