Planning my Planner

^Yeah, you’re correct on the first part. And they don’t open new classes for freshmen if that’s what you meant, they just open up spots in classes that freshmen will be taking. For example, it says that Math 10A has 5 total spots in each of it’s sections. When freshmen enrollment starts, that will jump to 30 I’m guessing.

Sailor’s a really good professor. He only taught 6A for a really long time, so he’ll be able to do it well. I’ve actually never heard a bad thing about his general chemistry lectures. (Upper-div advanced inorganic chem lab, that’s another story)

If I am not successful in getting into a waitlisted class, when’s the earliest I can enroll in a back up class? :/

OMG…and I was just checking the enrollment stats for CSE 8A and it’s:
Total Seats: 170
Avail. Seats: 156
Wait List: 68

Are the 14 remaining spots reserved for freshman or something? Even if it is, isn’t it pretty unlikely that I’ll get into those darn 14 spots by the time Sep 2nd rolls around. :(

Could I get an opinion on this? :]

I wonder if this was answered, but many classes seem to be 10 minutes apart when I try to sign up. Is that enough time to get from one class to another?

@masterTTP - sure, but locations would be a good thing to check on as well.

@tonito - it’s answered every year, multiple times. consensus: most of the time yes, sometimes no. schedule accordingly or get a bike.

@astrina
KingsElite said i should be able to get from york to center (walking) but a second opinion would be lovely :)

You can definitely trust $KingsElite$ – I graduated in 2007.

Make sure to walk out the east side of York and along Gilman, too many crowds if you use Ridge Walk.

i’m an econ major… should i take both math 20b and econ 1 fall quarter? i hear 20b is hard, so should i just take a GE instead of econ fall quarter and take econ 1 winter quarter instead?

if you had AP calc, 20B should be a piece of cake. you already saw 50% of the material in high school.

oh, all right. i’m just a little worried cause i took calc ab my junior year and i’m pretty sure i’ve forgotten everything by now haha
so math 20b and econ 1 fall quarter shouldn’t be too bad? i know a lot of people don’t do as well their first quarter…

Any opinions on this schedule? It’s looking like I’m going to take an 8am classes, since MAE 5’s lecture is only at 8. Is it worth it, or should I take something else?

Make sure you can get from class to class in 10 minutes

@samedifference

All the back to backs are makeable in 10 minutes, I checked. Personally, I HATE 8am classes and will avoid them at all costs. I don’t know what other options you have, or what time MAE 5 is offered next quarter so I couldn’t really tell you if you should take it this quarter or not. Explore your other options and see what classes are offered each quarter this year. Then you can make a good decision.

What’s so bad about 8 AM classes? Will I really have to force myself out of bed to get to class on time? Or is it terrible but still doable?

There is nothing inherently bad about 8 am classes. There will be no issue if you are a motivated and disciplined student.

I enjoy having earlier classes because after class I have the rest of the day to myself. I can go to the beach or go golfing. There is plenty of time to study for midterms or quizzes I may have the next day. Also, what is the benefit of having classes later in the day? So you can sleep in? Hardly a productive use of time.

*Not saying that is everyone’s reason for preferring later classes, but that is certainly true for a large number of students.

^So going to the beach and golfing is considered a productive use of time? If you guys don’t mind getting up early in the morning, then go right ahead. I just don’t like sitting in class tired. Ideally I want my classes to start at 11, but that’s just me.

When compared to sleeping—yes. Being out an active is good for both your social and physical health. It can help reduce the stress associated with being a student.

I recognize that what works for me may not work for everyone. However, I see a fair number of students on CC telling incoming freshman that early classes are the worse, and to avoid them at all costs. For the most part, there is nothing different about the class other than the time of day. If a student has no problem getting up in the morning and going to class, then that student will face no extra challenge just because the class is earlier in the morning.

My advice for incoming freshman would be to not fear any type of class schedule. Instead, be real with yourself and recognize what type of schedule you will be best suited for.

As an example:

Student A)–Likes to stay up late playing video games or studying. Already knows they will probably party regardless which night of the week it is. During high school, found themselves sleeping in late on days they didn’t have school.

Early classes may not be the right choice for this student. Because of the freedom college provides, they may find themselves struggling to get motivated to go to class every morning.

^Golf and going to the beach is considered being active!?!?!?!? I’m just messing with you, I know what you meant. You’re right, and I thought I wouldn’t mind the 8am classes because I was getting up for wrestling practices at 5:30am the quarter before, but it really wears on you.

Wrestling? Do they have it at UCSD? Although I haven’t wrestled for a while (I’m a veteran and have been out of high school for a bit), I think that would be the perfect sport for me to do to get back in shape.

If getting up for an 8 am class wears on you, I hope you don’t crack when you join the “real world” hahaha.
