Planning on majoring in Biomedical Engineering, and I have to be at UGA (Honors).

Hey guys.

So, due to outside circumstances, I have to attend UGA in the fall. I got into the honors program, thankfully. However, I know UGA really isn’t a good engineering school at all. Georgia Tech would be much better. Although I got into Tech, I have to go to UGA.

I really want to major in Biomedical Engineering, and I am definitely planning on going to grad school.

I also am hesitant to transfer, although I will fill out applications. I don’t want to pack up and leave after I’ve already established myself at UGA, and leave my friends, etc. So, I was thinking about staying at UGA all throughout undergrad and then go to a better Engineering grad school.

However, I am terrified that the fact that I went to UGA would make my chances of going to a respected, good engineering grad school would be extremely decreased.

I will definitely try to do as much research and other activities while I’m there to improve my chances.

Any advice?

You should be fine for getting into good grad schools if you get amazing grades, take rigorous classes and lots of electives in your field, and find someone to do research with at UGA. Every year UGA has students get into all the best grad schools so it’s entirely possible if you make it happen.

UGA offers BS degrees in Electrical and Mechanical engineering. Both are typical degrees for those seeking to earn a MS in Biomedical Engineering.

They also offer a BS in Biochemical Engineering (which isn’t offered at Tech).

Take any of these majors, and, as dcplanner pointed out, get involved in research, and you shouldn’t have any issues getting into a good grad school.
