On my application to ND I put chemical engineering as my major, but now I wish to pursue computer science. Will this change of heart affect my first year adviser? Should I notify someone of this change in interest?

Will this affect anything?

You were admitted to the Program of First Year Studies and given an advisor from that office. You aren’t registered in a specific college or major, so it’s not a problem at all.

However, I would recommend contacting someone in FYS about it now. Have they had you choose your classes for next semester yet? Chances are there won’t be much difference between a CS and CE major’s first semester, since you’ll have the first engineering Calc class, intro science class, intro engineering class, a writing or seminar class, and a university requirement, if memory serves (I’m not an engineer, but several good friends are, and I know several of them didn’t decide what specific major until the end of the year).

But anyway, just in case, I’d make sure FYS knows of your change in prospective major. Again, since it’s the same prospective college (engineering), there should be little to no difference. Nothing to worry about, though even if you were changing prospective colleges, it would be fairly simple at this stage.

I’m not sure if there are major differences in the first year curriculum or not, since I know a lot of the engineering programs take a lot of shared classes freshman year, but it might change your schedule. I would contact your advisor or First Year of Studies so you can get the correct schedule sorted out. Shouldn’t be a problem though, you are in no way obligated to keep the major you were planning on when you applied!
