Planning to take ACT

I am scheduling two test dates, one in September, and one in November. I am a sophomore at a community college and wanted to retake the ACTs because I only took it once in HS and bombed it (<23). I would like to hear honest opinions and tips about studying/preparing for a great score. My ideal score would be a 30 and I just finished summer school and plan to study about 5 days a week until the test day in September. I will also schedule a re-take in November or whenever the soonest day after the September test day is to ensure that I will have enough preparation to get a great score if not on the first test date, than the second one for sure.

Is it a good strategy to have two test days lined up right after? What is the best way to prepare and study for the ACT? My plan is to study for about a month straight 5 days a week throughout August. I plan to go to the library and get some preparation books and do a lot of practice tests online. Help me reach my goal of 30!

There is no November ACT for regular high school students, but it may be different for you. It goes September, October, and then December.

“Is it a good strategy to have two test days lined up right after?”

Sometimes it is, like if you really just need to take it again soon. It wouldn’t hurt.

“What is the best way to prepare and study for the ACT?”

Review material and take practice tests.

Also, here’s how the books go down:

Cracking the ACT (2009) - for English review (very good)
Kaplan(any edition) - some math review, but only for scores up to about a 25. (errors galore)
Real ACT Prep Guide - a must, 3 official practice tests (also know as the red book)
Sparksnotes - Free and alright, don’t use it by itself. Good English review
Peterson’s - Has something to do with the official ACT people, shouldn’t be bad
Any Barron’s book (you should probably avoid, it’s only for very high scorers)

Good luck!

Thanks for the thorough response. I really appreciate it.
