I go to UT and I know plenty of people who transferred in from CC and 4 year schools. Be aware that you’ll need a 4.0 to transfer into engineering and even that wont guarantee admittance. Judging from your success in HS I’d focus on more attainable schools rather than UT.
You know a lot of Texas community college students then?
Plenty of people from Seattle area community colleges get in to UW. I even know one Running Start kid who got into Caltech. (Caltech doesn’t take transfers from CC’s, he attended while still in high school.)
Most big state universities are required to save spots for transfers from their state community college system.
@AroundHere made a lot of good points at post #38 . . . worth a few re-reads. @sanimri7 , have you actually researched online or spoken with a community college counselor/advisor to get a factual picture of what opportunities you would have if you attended a community college and did well? In California, the community colleges offer a guaranteed path to UC colleges if students do well and take specified classes.
One of my children had undiagnosed ADHD and dysgraphia. He is a very bright kid (GATE identified from an early age, etc) and had good grades but we had him tested because there was a huge gap between his ability to comprehend (very high) and write (low . . . major grammar and spelling problems). The testing was a pain, but he was happy to understand why he had such problems spelling some simple words. The tester said one part of his brain was acting like a new Ferrari and the other like an old clunker, which caused greater discombobulation than if both parts were in harmony at either a high or low level. He also started on ADHD medications, which is a whole different topic, but worked well for him. I will note that his grandfather had very severe dysgraphia at a time when little was known about learning disabilities, as well as likely ADHD. It is so interesting how some of these things do run in families.
Our local community college is known for working with kids who have learning disabilities. When it’s time for this kid to look at colleges, we will definitely take into account whether the college has good support for students with LDs if he still needs it.
Nice stories to hear, but stuck on academics for now. I don’t have any academic issues. Its just them i’m slow. and because of that it take me a lot longer to study. I purchased a bunch of act book and have a couple of tutors to help. So maybe a change can occur (a high one) other than, i’ll just give it a shot
Wasn’t the point of starting this thread that you think you’re more than “just slow”? That you have more talent than your grades and scores give you credit for?
This is why we suggested you should get an evaluation for learning disabilities. So that you can understand why you’re a whiz at hands on stuff like those circuit boards and yet struggle with academics.
oh yes absolutely. But to colleges scores and test do matter, and Some times it can be a future. I’m pretty much at a make or break future to get into these schools. Its cause of that test mainly. I’am on an IEP but that could affect college admissions, from what i have heard. But so far the IEP has not helped much.
Oh, so nooooowwwwwww you tell us! Sigh.
What is your IEP for? Do you have a professional medical diagnosis or just the IEP from the school? (The school cannot give a medical diagnosis like “dyslexia” “autism” etc, whereas a medical learning disability diagnosis tells exactly how and why you are “slow.”) If you do not have a medical diagnosis from an educational psychologist or similar, you need to get one. Google your county name plus special needs advocate and get someone to help you get a full evaluation.
What is your IEP for? I just have a disability in learning (not much) its only in English, Reading (and writing is a meh). I don’t have any autism or dyslexia. and i just only have the IEP plan (not sure about the 504). I heard his can affect admissions, so that is why nobody know about this, but you guys.
So I’m actually from South Dakota, but then I moved here in Washington in August. In South Dakota they put so many rules on me, but when I got here in my new high school. They removed all of them and replaces them with ehat i really need.
What they considered was
Put my self back into Regular Chemistry from AP Chemistry
Make Psychology a pass or fail option
and other post education
I’am open to instate schools, So I will apply to WSU (not U-dub Because it rains)
and that’s it
If i need help i just ask
otherwise I’m totally fine
Any more question’s?
Current UT CNS student who wasnt in top 6% here
GPA: 3.0
Percentile: 50%
SAT: ~1500
Got a scholarship and got accepted. It happens sometimes.
Brutal truth? You might not get in based on statistics. But you should still try. UT is a great school, and I am very proud here, but it also isnt as exclusive as people here try to make it out to be.
@jiahuini, based on UT’s CDS, https://utexas.app.box.com/v/CDS2016, 47,511 applied and 19,182 were accepted. Out of that 19,182 75% should have been automatic and that total is 14,387. That leaves 4795 students that were admitted that were not automatic. If you subtract 14,387 from the total admittance number of 47,511, that leaves you 33,124 applications that were not automatic. If you divide 4795 by 33,124, you get an admittance ratio of 14.4%. I know this calculation probably should consider some other variables but I think it is close to reality. So, if you are not an automatic acceptance and do not have other skills that UT desires, like athletic, I do think your scores and other hard stats need to be above the top 25% number of 1410 SAT or 32 ACT. For certain majors such as CS, Engineering, business and nursing (and I am sure there are others) well above those marks unless you have something that UT desires.
Also, about 92% of all acceptances, the students are in the top 25% of the class. 98.5% of the students are in the top 50% of their class. If you are outside that top 25% of the class, there probably is a holistic reason for your acceptance.
thats awesome that you got in, and i’m definitely trying, Need to get my recommendation letter sorted out. um would maybe a 1400 + give me a chance into cockrell
Hey guys what the average score for the ACT in the cockerel school of engineering, Like maybe 33 regular or above?
oh mistake, when i was a junior at my old school i was in the top 50%, but not top 25 or 10
@sanimri7 Hey dont give up. You can still boost your scores if you take the SATs again. And yeah, I think the avg ACT in UT is like 33ish.
that’s what I came to know to. Yeah i’m trying for it as i’m going about 1430+.
I don’t think your IEP is actually working if the solution is just to take you out of classes when the going gets tough. I think you could benefit from a private evaluation from an educational psychologist. It will help you be more successful in college.
As far as whether to talk about special needs on your college app - you really need to assess that on a case by case basis. If you used accommodations on the SAT, it is NOT reported to colleges with your scores.
it whatever, I have it if i need it. right now i’am working on individual sections of the test an working on resume and letters of rec really.
Stop the hate for Bama, and put some safety schools on there-talk to your counselor about which schools are a safety for you.
Bruh, this post is done. Its really late for you to say something. Sorry
