Hi.
I desire to be admitted to Wharton ED. Here are my stats:
White male from New Jersey(ouch).
Go to highly ranked prep school in central NJ(Peddie School).

My school doesn't weight GPA or rank, but i'd be top 10%.

UWGPA including freshman year: 3.72.
UWGPA excluding freshman year: 3.95(came from an abysmal public middle school and was disinterested with school and everything; quickly wised up).
AP scores: 5 AP US, 4 AP Eng Lang.

SAT scores: 2240(all one test); 790 Math, 740 CR, 710 Writing.(retaking in October)
33 ACT: 35 eng, 34 math, 34 reading, 30 science.(retaking in September)
SAT II scores: 800 Math II, 800 US History.

ECs:
100+ miscellaneous comm service hours(explanation below)
80 hours volunteering at an old folks home helping out.(11)
15 random hours at school comm service days.
20ish for an ESL program(10, 11, 12) at my school, but not nearly all of my hours for this have been recorded. the teacher who runs the program is haphazard with his records. in reality, I have done this for either one hour or two a week during my lunch since sophomore year, tutoring our english-deficient janitors the language. it requires compassion and spanish skills.
Writer for sports section of newspaper freshman year.
Sports/Current Events editor(switched to CE after soph year.) 10, 11, 12
Int. Politics Club- writer for daily web publication and head web technician.
Vice-President/Co-reviver of Country Music Club.
Varsity Baseball since freshman year.
Varsity soccer since sophomore year(had to quit though midway through junior year because of a knee injury).
Between Freshman and Sophomore year, my Babe Ruth all star team won state championship. I was named to all district team.
For Senior year: chosen as a community prefect(mentor to freshman), orientation advisor, and chosen to Gold Key, which is a group of 10 rising seniors who are exemplary. Obligated to give a tour a week and usher many school functions.
Within the last couple of months I have become very interested in politics and am determined to start up the Young Republicans Club at my school(though it is incredibly left-leaning, there are some adamant Republicans in the rough).
Essays: definitely above average.
Recommendations: excellent.

One final note, our school's largest benefactor, Walter H. Annenberg attended Peddie as well as UPenn(Wharton), so we tend to send around 8 kids to Penn each year. I think this will definitely boost my chances for ED Wharton.

to mention:
this summer, I also did a 1 week internship with a local family friend who has his own law firm. In addition, I was the assistant coach on his 11 year old son’s all-star little league team.

and in terms of work experience, my freshman year i was an umpire for the local little league from march through august. my sophomore year, i worked in the kitchen of the local ancient order of hibernians scrubbing pots and pans during banquets. during the summer after my sophomore year and junior year, i tutored local kids in mathematics.

I would greatly appreciate insight in regards to my chances. thank you.

welcome to cc! (penn is very liberal too, but I think different views will be welcomed). u do a lot of things 4 yr school but not too much out in the real world. that may very well be okay, but i have no way of knowing. take at least another satII. never go for the bare minimum- it says something about u. good luck!

Thank you very much for the response. Yea, it’s a boarding school, so it’s a little difficult to get out and do things that are ‘in the real world’. But with the Young Republicans Club, hopefully we’ll be able to do some things to aid NJ’s gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie.
Also, in terms of an SAT II, would you advise taking an SAT II in October instead of retaking the SAT? I was thinking of taking the SAT I in October then taking an SAT II in November and hoping that that got to them in time to factor into the Early Decision, since only 2 SAT IIs are required.

did you take ap classes? other than those 2

chances arent great if you only have 2 aps and your school offers much more. if 8 or so kids get in a year, would top 10% not be outside that range?

the guy paying fro kids to get into penn will help seeing as that matriculation list has most kids going to penn…with the other ivies are 1 or 2 kids a year…seems odd doesnt it?

u need to utilize both october and november. i would take more satIIs (aim for 2 more) in october and then retake the sats in november. i’m sure it would arrive on time for ed, and since it’s ed, i would bet that they would be understanding. plus, from what i’ve heard, the only way scores are delivered late is if u have to take the test in a different way. u should be fine. don’t worry.

collegebound is right about the aps. i took 8 exams by the time i applied (but 2 were self taught). it’s okay though, u just have to go 4 it. use october and november well. good luck!!!

collegebound is not completely correct. how many APs are you taking this year? which ones? hopefully one of them is calc ab or bc because wharton requires you to take at least calc ab before entering next september. also, good work with the peddie republican club! i’m glad to see it restarted from the sorry days when people (who did not have much respect from our school) ran the pra. good luck buddy! pm me if you have any important or personal questions, because i went to your school.

at good private schools courses are rigorous to the point that # of classes designated AP isn’t
all that relevant. overall you have a good shot, though your counselor will be able to articulate your exact chances the best.

Thanks everyone. Is there anything that I can do in the next couple of months that Wharton particularly looks for? I’m going to try to raise ACT and SAT at least a little bit, and naturally I will try to write good essays, but other than that any ‘hook-esque’ things that would help?

and classes for next year just so ya’ll can get a more complete picture:
AP Calculus BC
AP European History
AP U.S. Government and Politics
AP Spanish Language
Organic Chemistry
English 12
