Please Chance a Panicking Student UofM :\

Hi CC, applying to UofM EA in 3 months and I am SCARED OUT OF MY MIND... dream school, 3 campus visits... (unnerving email below)

My basic stats:

AP Classes:

Senior Schedule:
AP Spanish
AP Calc BC
AP Psych

AP classes: 7

Won't list all my extracurriculars to save everyone some reading, but my main 3 are:
4 years Varsity Golf
Co-Founder of a group at the B.L.O.C.K.
SciOly/Key Club/ buildOn - 3 years each

Good recommendation from my Adv. Comp. A teacher who went to the Univ. of Chicago.

So now my unnerving email from my counselor who i've been emailing throughout the summer... she sort of "Chanced" me, saying:

".......but overall from past experiences, I have NO hesitation in saying that you are a strong candidate for UofM, and should you get in I will not be at all surprised. However, I don't want to get your hopes up because many students like yourself or even better have failed to get into UofM - it is becoming increasingly difficult to get into every year, and CommonApp definitely didn't make it easier. I do want to assure you that you are a strong candidate applying to a very competitive school. Apply EA and write fantastic essays - those are key!!..."

The email went on but that's the main part that got me thinking/into panic mode.

PLEASE chance me, ANY OPINIONS are appreciated, early thanks to anyone:)

If you want me to chance you, give me a link!

I’d put your chances of getting in at 75%. You definitely are a very strong candidate… try getting that SAT or ACT score up just a little bit and that would solidify your chances. Definitely submit the 32 though, that’s better than your 2090 (imo)

Good course rigor/In state leads me to believe you’ll get in. Good luck!
Chance me back please?

I’d say your chances are pretty good, I got in and my stats were similar. Just make sure to write good essays. Give convincing personal reasons why you want to attend, not just that “it’s a great school” or something like that. Don’t tell them things they already know.

Above average ACT, above average GPA, AND in-state. No need to panic-you have great chances!

I’ve seen worse Asian applicants get accepted. A few of them were complete morons and they even got in early. You’re IS, have a good ACT score, a strong GPA, good courseload, good ECs and what you say is a good teacher rec. That sounds pretty good to me. As long as you don’t bomb your essays, I am 99% certain you’ll get accepted.

Don’t stress too much about that e-mail, that e-mail is about as good of one you’ll ever get from a counselor. She’s basically saying that she expects you to get in but of course she can’t actually word it like that.

Why would anyone take the opinion of someone on whether or not you would get in seriously when they themselves are asking for opinions…

Like the enail said, I think you have a good shot but it’s not set in stone.

Don’t panic, you have as good a chance as almost anyone. Your counselor is just reminding you that it’s never for sure, but she is clearly hinting that she thinks you’ll get in, and I agree. Make sure you apply early. Good luck!

Why would you mark “Other” if you are Asian? Isn’t Asian one of the choices?

Even if he is only like 5% “other” why not?

It’ll be like a mystery gift for admissions. Maybe they’ll get something they want like African American or Hispanic or, if they’re really lucky Native American. Or they just get that boring Asian, or even worse, White…

(I’m assuming Other is like Multiple or something)

Michigan is a match. As several posters above have suggested, you have a good shot, especially if you apply EA, but at the same time, as your counselor has indicated, Michigan has deferred and rejected students of your caliber in the last couple of years.

Yes, actually, it’s the sign of a GOOD counselor that she’s letting you know the trends, and it’s always good to have a safety you love just to cover the odds.

Some kids have counselors who do not really stay current on admission trends, which is less than helpful when it comes to Umich. So don’t panic - just be glad that you’ve been given a heads up to write awesome essays and demonstrate your interest specifically in UMich ;)

Sorry, its been months since my last standardized test, but when i said marking “other” i meant the option that didn’t specify my ethnicity. It might’ve said “prefer not to specify” or something along that lines. But thank you all for your opinions!! It really helps to see how i stand from the perspectives of other people, and i value them!

Calm down. You are extremely likely to get in. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. People, especially people connected to a University, love to make their school sound like it’s difficult for everyone to get in. UM is difficult, but it’s not that bad (especially not for stellar high school students), and you are almost a lock. I’m instate as well and I know kids (and this is from last year, so don’t yell at me for being pre-Commonapp) who got in with less impressive stats. And for the record, EA makes it easier to get in, not harder.

I agree with kmc…that is a good counselor. I’m assuming that UofM is not the only place you are applying but clearly with your record you should apply to UofM. Unless i skimmed over it, your post also did not say which school you were applying. UofM is probably very familiar with your high school so can put it all in context. Don’t stress, not worth the energy - put that energy to good use on your essay.

Thank you both for the advice! I never really thought about people making their University sound more difficult to get into, but it actually sounds logical - i’d say it’s a pride thing! And yes, my counselor is very very nice and just like everyone else, she also thinks i’m over-stressing everything. But yes, I’ve started on my essay:)

Don’t worry about marking other. I mean you can if you want, but they are all too busy looking at your transcript and test scores to notice or care. You’ll be fine

Or will he?

Apply EA for sure. I just talked to an admissions counselor last night at an event and basically asked her to chance me because I was concerned about the caliber of students being turned away. She told me that you basically see the highly qualified students being turned away when they DON’T apply early action. I have the same ACT as you but a 4.0 GPA and she said I shouldn’t be too concerned as long as I don’t bomb the essays.
