Hi, I'm going to be a senior next year. I wanted to know my chances of getting admitted to UMD. I am in state, and I want to major in some type of Biology. I want to go into the veterinary field. My cumulative GPA is 4.07. Also, my class rank is like 2/473 or something. My first SAT scores were M:600 CR: 590 W:610. My second time around I got a M:590 CR: 610 and W:680. My SAT subject test's were horrendous, considering I hadn't been in a biology class for over a year. Also, the testing conditions were terrible. Lot's of noise. US History: 590 Math lvl 1: 560 Bio E: 500. Aside from the terrible test scores, I am involved in a lot of EC's. I run cross country and track. I also participate in Varsity swimming. I am in the biomedical sciences program at my school, and have performed various lab techniques. I showcased the Biomed program at the USA Science and Engineering festival in DC. I volunteer in a local hospital. I am also in Bay Ecology Club, Varsity club, and NHS(treasurer). I am also in Spanish Honor Society. I have multiple volunteer hours in these activities. I lead VBS crews at my church. I have also mentored at my church for confirmation. I am currently involved in a summer internship at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in MRICD(Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense), where I am studying the effects of nerve agents on the liver. I get to work in a government laboratory with very advanced equipment in this internship. I will also be receiving animal handling training through the internship, where I will learn to euthanize an animal. I am also trying to volunteer at my local Humane Society, as well as at a veterinary office. I have shadowed a veterinarian. I am in the animal club at my school. I am white and my parent's income is under $100,000 a year. I took 2 AP classes as a junior, 1 as a sophomore, and I will be taking 4 as a senior. I would have taken more, but the biomedical program took up classes. I will be taking classes at my local community college while involved with school, so I will be very busy next year. These classes will be for physical education credits, which was entirely up to me because I could have just taken the course at my school(I need phys ed to graduate). I choose to take them at the college next year so that I may take an additional AP class. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO IMPROVE MY CHANCES! I HAVE ONE MORE SAT TESTING DATE BEFORE THE PRIORITY DEADLINE! SHOULD I RETAKE THE SAT OR THE SAT SUBJECT TESTS!! I MAY ALSO TAKE THE ACT IN SEPTEMBER.Thanks!!!!!!

“SHOULD I RETAKE THE SAT OR THE SAT SUBJECT TESTS!!”

Maryland “accepts” SAT subject test scores, but I don’t think they are “considered” for admission. What they really look at is the SAT scores - Critical Reading and Math scores only.

So, it depends on what other schools you are applying to. If other schools require SAT subject tests, then it is worthwhile for you to take what they require for admission consideration. However, for Maryland, SAT subject tests are not necessary.

Paragraphs would help. That was hard to read!

Have you tried ACT? There are ACT dates in September and October. Scores from the October administration of either SAT or ACT will reach College Park in time to be considered with priority applications.

And you should file your application by the Nov. 1 priority deadline. Everybody should apply by the Nov. 1 priority deadline.

It’s true that your CR+M of 1200 isn’t great for UMCP, but I don’t think it puts you out of contention. You have good grades in a pretty serious course of study; that should help mitigate the effects of an SAT that doesn’t wow the admissions folks.

I completely agree with maryversity about SAT II. You don’t need them for UMCP; in fact, UMCP says, “We also do not evaluate SAT II scores as a factor in the admissions decision” ([University of Maryland - SAT and ACT](http://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/sat.cfm)). So unless you’re also applying EA or ED to another college or university that does need them, you can forget about them, at least for now. The single biggest thing you could do to improve your application to College Park is to raise your score on the SAT Reasoning Test (or ACT).

With the exception of your SAT scores, you seem like an honors student who has a good chance at recieving a good scholarship. I think right now you would gain admission, but with those SAT scores, you probably won’t get into honors or recieve a scholarship. If you can score 1400+ or 31+, then you will most likley get in to honors with a scholarship. Also for priority deadline, they accept november test scores. Sign up for every test date from now until the end of November. Also, a quick Princeton Review SAT class over the summer might help.

Good Luck!

Actually, mrphysics, they’ll accept scores from the November test dates, but they also say you can’t be sure the scores will arrive in time to be considered with your priority application.

Thanks you guys!!! I really would like to get into the Honors College, so I’m going to retake the SAT 1 and probably try out the ACT. I’m going to apply ED to Cornell, so I may submit my SAT II scores for that. Do you think my SAT II scores will sway UMD’s decision(even though they say they don’t consider them in admissions)? Because I don’t know if I can withhold those scores when sending my SAT 1?
