Please chance me at University of Wash!

Hello, I am an out of state asian female and would like to consider university of Washington as an alternative.
Stats:
Unweighted GPA: 3.96
Weighted: 4.29
ACT: 28 composite, 29 superscore
AP classes taken/taking: AP world history, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB
Honors: Geometry Honors, US History Honors, American Lit Honors, Euro lit honors
Extracirriculars: JV Volleyball (1 year = Captain + Coaches award), Varsity volleyball (2 years,1 year captain), Club volleyball (1 year), track (1 year), Basketball manager (1 year), Community service of 100+ hours (summer program + basketball programs), Worked/interned at a neighborhood center, summer program and gov. service (3 years total), in a youth development/education program (3 years)
My family’s income is about: $80000 (Keep in mind we live in a city where the minimum wage is about $12-13 and rent is 5k+/month)
I have one other sibling in college going into their third year.
Will I get any financial aid/help/grants from UW? How much will it cost me to attend?

It looks like a match to me. Your GPA is good, your test scores are right on UW’s average, and your ECs look great too.

However, the financials of going to UW out of state are where it really gets tricky. Depending on the source (and whether or not you live on West Campus, North Campus, etc) the cost of attendance (yearly) for out of state is somewhere between 45,000 and 50,000.

About half of the out of state students receive purple and gold scholarships, which range anywhere from $3,000-$7,500 per academic year. I’m not sure what the criteria is; need-based, merit-based, dunno. I was accepted to UW out-of-state with a 3.9 unweighted GPA, 29 ACT, and I didn’t receive one, but I know people with lower grades who did. See: https://admit.washington.edu/Paying/PurpleGold

Unfortunately, that’s most of what you’re going to get as an out-of-state student. The rest of the financial aid you will receive are loans. They seem to be the way that people pay for out of state. It’s a little frustrating that UW allocates its best aid for in-state (considering that their tuition is far, far cheaper to begin with) but it also makes sense, considering they’re a state school and they need to cater to its in-state residents.

Hope this helped!

@godawgs182 Thanks for responding! I’m now pretty confident I can get in, it’s just the cost of tuiton + boarding I’m worried about since I will still have another sibling in college & costs do add up quickly espeically as UW is 40-50k OOS. I was wondering if you did follow through to attending and if you did, did you consider establishing residency so you could get in state tuition your 2nd year? Thanks!

@kk1234 , Yes. I drive up for classes next week. And yes, my family has considered it, but I have a younger sister in a high school that she’s very happy at, etc so it would be hard for the rest of my family to move like that.

In terms of individually establishing residence, you have to prove to the state that you aren’t moving to Washington for educational purposes. IE you have to be employed and work 30 hours a week among other things, which I doubt I’ll be able to merge with my academic schedule very easily.
