If you are very interested in engineering, there are not many Ivies you should look into. They are many engineering schools better than most of the Ivies.

I realize that most ivies do not have really good engineering programs, but I have other passions outside of engineering. In particular Cornell does have a top rated engineering program and I really loved Cornells location and atmosphere as well. I have a few family friends who attended Cornell and Cornell engineering and from what they’ve said and what Ive seen I know that Cornell is the right place for me. I am also considering MIT and other engineering schools.

You can also look at UPenn Engineering, Stanford, and Ca lTech
Other good schools can be UMich, UC Berkeley
For you
Cornell: High match, low reach
UPenn: Reach
Stanford: Reach
Cal Tech: Reach
UMich: Match
UC Berkeley: High match, low reach

For UMich CoE, OP would be high match to low reach. Admission rate from OOS is below 20% these days. Admission average ACT was 33 last year.

If you apply early decision, I would say this is a high reach. Not because you are not an excellent candidate, but it’s still an Ivy and you have a lot of competition.

Can you chance me?

I appreciate all the advice. I have visited and will be spplying to Upenn engineering and stanford as well. I realize that these schools are kind of a crapshoot to get into.

I am also taking a serious look at Bowdoin and Dartmouth although I realize Bowdoin had no engineering.

What do you think about Purdue, UC-Berkeley and Columbia? They all have excellent engineering programs. And you have strong stats. With an excellent essay to top it off, you should be at least on par with other competitors.

HR: Columbia (b/c it’s Columbia)
R: Dartmouth, UPenn, Cornell, UCB
M: Purdue

You do have the numbers and your ECs are really good. However, there is nothing that will make you stand out from the 35K odd people applying there (not saying that you don’t stand a chance). I think that you have a really good shot at Cornell ED.

Best of luck!

Very strong stats and numbers. Additionally, you have many ECs relating to science and math which is good. One thing you could do is maybe do more community service. Other than that, I think your profile is really strong.

You should really look into Michigan’s engineering program. It’s very competitive, my brother is in the program and loves it. Incredible internship, study abroad, and job opportunities

“I have other passions outside of engineering.”

Cornell is a great school, and you will have decent flexibility in engineering there. My SO is a Cornelian.

The Ivy that attracts the most amazing students who have other passions as well is Penn. The combination of a flexible curriculum and a range of dual degree programs, dual major feasibility, unique programs such as NETS or DMD, and the ability to take classes in any of Penn’s schools under the One Penn policy is appealing. Placement of Penn engineer students is extremely strong.

If you love Cornell and Ithaca, you may not find the urban setting of Penn to be as attractive, but it could be worth checking it out. DD is at Penn.

Columbia has a great eng. school too, but the curriculum is quite rigid because of the core curriculum.

I appreciate your time. I have been talking things over with my counselar and Cornell is still my first choice. I visited penn and I have to admit its location kind of put me off from it, but I will still apply to their engineering school. Ive heard the Dartmouth is also good with multiple disciplines.

The more Ive thought about things though, the more I realize I love building, creating, and designing which brings me back to engineering schools.

Its hard to make big choices like these, but I know one day Ill look back and wonder why I put so much stress on myself.
