Hi everyone! I am a current junior who has become slightly obsessed with CC. One of my top choice schools is Georgetown University and I plan on applying EA to the College. I have officially visited once over the summer between my sophomore and junior years. Below I have list any relevant information about myself that I could think of. If you could please give me your thoughts on my chances at getting into Georgetown, I would greatly appreciate it!
Demographics
- White, middle-upper class female, attending a very reputable school in the Midwest (top 15 private school in state)
- Intended major: Either Justice and Peace Studies with a minor in Philosophy & Bioethics OR a major in Biology with a minor in Justice and Peace Studies
Academics:
- GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.67 W
- Rank: School doesn’t rank, but I am either first or second in the class; definitely top 5% of about 110 students
- Course Load (I’ve taken the most rigorous courses available with many honors classes Freshman and sophomore year)
** Junior Year: AP US Government, AP Biology, AP Physics 1, Honors English, Honors Spanish, Honors Pre-Calc, a science research elective
** Senior Year: AP Chemistry, AP Human Geo, AP Lit, AP Spanish, AP Calculus, and a social justice elective + science research elective - ACT: 34C (36 English, 35 Reading, 34 Math, 31 Science, 11 Writing)
- SAT: 1530C (760 Reading and Writing, 770 Math, 23 (?) Writing)
- SAT II Subject Tests: Yet to take; plan on taking English, Math I or Math II, and Biology
- AP Scores (so far): European History (5)
Awards:
- Silver Medalist on National Spanish exam
- Second Team All-Conference Golfer
- Won a few writing competitions and have been published as a result
Extracurriculars:
- Elected Student Senator (11-12 grade) —> the highest body of student government at my school is the Senate to which I was elected. We plan various school functions such as dances, daily assemblies, open houses, student/parent liaison activities, activity bells at school, as well as our other daily duties.
- Campaign Fellow for Hillary Clinton Campaign —> For numerous months, I was a part-time fellow for the campaign in which I ran phone banks, registered voters, organized canvassers, coordinated rallies and other parties, and ran GOTV.
- Biology Club (Founder and Co-President; 10-12 grade)
- A school Research Program —> I am going to be researching at a nearby, prestigious university with a professor that I know. It is a structural, molecular biology project in which we seek to understand a signaling pathway and the structure of the proteins/operons within it. The project I am working on will place me and a graduate student as the heads on the project and the professor is structuring it with the hopes that I may enter various science fairs.
- Key Club (Coordinator; 9-12 grade)
- Retreat Leader (10th grade)
- Mock Trial Varsity Attorney (10-12 grade)
- Varsity Captain of Girl’s Golf Team (11-12 grade)
- Yearbook (Upper Staff & Photographer; 10-12 grade)
- International Student Mentor —> Basically, I buddy with Chinese foreign exchange students to introduce them to the school/America and spend lots of time with them in and out of school.
- NHS, NSHSS
- Girl’s State —> Will be attending this summer; applying to be a Girl’s Nation Senator!
- Violin and Saxophone —> both in school band and lessons outside of school (7 years on both)
Community Involvement:
- Minister at my Church —> Very low commitment, but I am Catholic & Georgetown is a Jesuit University!
- Vacation Bible School TA —> dedicate two weeks every summer to planning and teaching kids PreK-5th grade
- Tutor —> The only paid “job” I’ve had; I tutored middle school kids in math, science, and English as well as freshmen at my school in biology
Summer Activities:
- Golf, college visits, science research, violin and saxophone lessons, Girl’s State, traveling (overall, nothing amazing)
Writing:
- Recommendations:
** I am having 4 recs written for me by teachers and my college counselor and I are specifically picking certain ones for certain colleges. The teachers who are writing for me are either teachers whom I have known for a long time or are extremely fond of me. I have very positive, close relationships with all of them. Thus far I have: Honors and AP Biology Teacher as well as Moderator for Biology Club, Freshman History and AP Government teacher, Current Honors English Teacher, Current Honors Trig/PreCalc Teacher
** My college counselor is probably the adult I am closest to at my school besides my Biology and Gov. teachers. She follows my progress very closely, so she knows me well professionally, but I also eat lunch with her almost once every other week, so she is a good friend.
** I have also thought about obtaining an additional rec from my PI/the professor I am doing research for at the University to speak to my work ethic and science interest. - Essay // Supplement:
*For my essay, I’m planning on writing a slightly humorous piece about being born prematurely and how my grit/will to survive despite my health problems has translated into who I am today. I’ll probably connect this to both my love of government and biology research. However, this is just one idea of many that I have seemed to latch onto.
* I plan on providing the abstract to my summer research as supplementary material.
Other Information:
- I am legacy at Georgetown; my brother went to SFS and graduated in 2014. I have spent A LOT of time (by this, I mean 90% of all my vacations since his acceptance in 2010 have been to GTown) at Georgetown and know many of his professors on a personal basis.
- Hooks: I am quite hookless; however, as a girl interested in STEM and a specific interest in various Georgetown programs (such as the Justice and Peace Program, Center for Social Justice, & FOCI) I believe I can stand out a bit as a Georgetown applicant.
I have been planning on retaking both the ACT and SAT (on practice tests I had been averaging a 35 and a 1560). I believe that those slightly lower scores, along with my lack of prestigious awards or ECs, and upperclass, white demographics are my biggest weaknesses. If there are any other things that you think I could improve on, please do not hesitate to tell me. All thoughts/advice is appreciated!
Thank you so much! Go Hoyas
