Please chance me for Hopkins, Cornell, Tufts, Brown

MIT
Brown
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Tufts
Carnegie Mellon
Haverford
Brandeis

My Stats:

SAT: 2170(Math-760, Writing-720, Reading-690)

SAT II: Math Level 2-750, Physics-750

Unweighted GPA: 3.9

Class Rank: My school doesn't rank, but I am definitely in the top 5%

Extracurriculars: Three sport athlete, guitar player, done some community service, calculus teaching assistant, member of two clubs.

Essays: My counselor said my commonapp essay was unbelievable.

Recommendations: These should be excellent, I saw my counselor's and it was really great.

Everything is solid except the ECs which are kind of weak. I’m gonna say MIT, Brown, Cornell, JHU and tufts are mid to low reaches. (MIT is a high reach actually). CMU IDK.

I don’t see how my ECs are weak. I know they are nothing stellar, but they should not hold me back. My college counselor thinks the same. Why do you consider my ECs to be weak?

No initiative, although they may be “good” there is no wow-factor, and that is what is usually needed to make it to top schools.

Your GPA is good, but honestly, there’s nothing else about it. Your ECs are decent, but your SAT score could be better. 2170 isn’t usually enough for any Ivies. I’d say Cornell would be a reach, Brown would be a high reach, and MIT would be ***akhowthehellamigetinthischool reach. Definitely a match at everything else though, maybe a low reach for JHU.

^The OP’s SAT score of 2170 is ABOVE the avg score (actually the midpoint of the 25%-75% range) for freshman at Brown (2128) and Cornell (2083) and about spot-on to M.I.T.'s avg score (2188). So it hard to see how you can argue that “2170 isn’t usually enough for any Ivies”.

IMO, his subjective stats look just fine for any school. Sports and clubs seem “well rounded”, good use of time - although often a “well-lopsided” candidate is advantaged thru demontrating a strong passion and achievement in a focused field. It will of course come down to the essays, recs, and how well his story can be gleaned from his ap by the adcoms.

I would say he is a high match or match to all schools except Brown and M.I.T.which are low reaches even for very accomplished applicants.

I think your ECs are weak for some of the colleges you’re applying to. I mean, they’re not as weak as they could be, but you don’t have any leadership positions and they don’t really display passion in anything. For MIT, Brown, and Johns Hopkins, a large portion of the applicants will have 4.0 GPAs and >2300 SAT scores so you need something to differentiate yourself from the pack. I’d say Brown, MIT, and Johns Hopkins are really high reaches. Cornell, Tufts, and Haverford are possible. Carnegie Mellon and Brandeis are probably your best bets.

Might also look at Holy Cross and Colgate.
