Please, chance me for my dream school. I can handle the truth!

Hello. I am a rising junior at a private high school and I'm anxious to know what you think my chance of acceptance is. I'm in love with Yale, though I am realistic and know not to get my hopes up. I encourage your honesty!

I attended a public, fairly non-competitive high school for 9th & 10th and then switched to a private, competitive high school for 11th & 12th. Here, I will list my stats:

9th: B average, 10th: A- average, 11th: A+ average
Overall average: A- (around a 3.7)
My W GPA is around a 4.55. My current school doesn't rank. I have taken the most rigorous courses with the exception of my freshman year in which I only took 2 out of an available 5 Honors courses. I have taken more AP's (in school + self-study) than the majority of students in my class.

SAT I: 2360, Subjects: Literature: 800, Bio: 800, Spansh: 770, ACT: 35

AP's: Chem: 5, US: 5, Enviro: 5, Psych: 5 (self-studied), Geo: 5 (self-studied)
Senior AP's: Bio, Euro, Calculus AB, Spanish, English

Now, for my extra-curriculars.. Hopefully, it does not seem that I have spread myself all over the place. I'm interested in so many different things but I'm very passionate about everything that I do and I hope that this will be blatantly clear to admissions through my essays, rec's, etc.

Performing & Visual Arts: Starred in 5 shows (regional awards), Starred in 2 independent films, co-directed and filmed an environmental documentary & directed/filmed a documentary myself (regional awards), national photography awards, photography featured in local galleries

Writing: Editor-in-chief of award-winning literary and arts magazine, national and regional awards for poetry, a dramatic script, and nonfiction writing, Attended a competitive (to be accepted), prestigious writing workshop for young writers

Environment: Leadership position with nonprofit, national and global delegations (youngest to attend global ones), Independent study with group at school, honored in international and national competitions (as a group and individually), Work with school's Green Team

Volunteerism
Tutor for Spanish and English-speaking disadvantaged youth (2 years)
Theater with disabled (mentally and physically) children (2 years)
Have sold some photography to benefit charities
Volunteer with city's recycling department (3 years)

Your biggest weakness is your GPA, but I think they’ll look favorably on the rising trend. Yale loves people strong in the visual arts so that’s a plus for you. Scores are great, and the rest of your ECs look great.

I’d say you have a much better chance than the average applicant. Good luck :)

Sounds like you are very very passionate about your extracurriculars. Maybe find a way to tie them together… a common thread? You don’t really seem to have a hook but all around your stats look good. I’d say you have a reasonable chance; Yale is realistic, but like for everyone else, it is a toss up because there are so many great students.

Thank you both for your replies. Gryffon: I hope that they do see that I worked harder and gained more motivation each year. My junior year truly shows my capabilities. Thank you!

Arreyn: I am! Hm… I’m not sure. I mean, there are definitely similarities between some of my EC’s like filmmaking and the environment, and acting and filmmaking. Also, my position at the environmental nonprofit involves writing and media relations.

Hi Natalie,

Sounds interesting! I’ll be applying to Yale (SCEA) this coming year, and I dabble a bit in photography as well… care to exchange portfolios?

GoldenCoast, yeah! That would be great. I’ll pm you later because I’m exhausted.

OP, are your ECs current, or predicted?

Oops… I think I’m younger than I am, haha. I wrote “rising junior” but I’m actually a rising senior, as evidenced by my age on my profile (17).

So no, my EC’s are current.

Any more opinions?

Everything looks great, so now it’s up to chance. Your ECs don’t seem scattered at all, as you seem to have a focus on art/writing.

Thanks so much! I hope that Yale agrees :)

Bump, 10char.

Anyone else, please?

Is it just me, or does it look strangely familiar to : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/941022-what-my-chances-yale-brown-stanford-others.html</a></p>

Yeah, it kinda does… Weird.

Actually, I’m pretty sure it’s all the same person. Same GPA, SAT Reasoning, SAT II, AP scores, senior year schedule, same interest in environmentalism/photography (and same refusal to share your portfolio)/writing/performing arts (and I stopped here since I’m too lazy to compare both of them further).

You know, this is the third account you’ve used to post a chance me thread - the first being “bookwormer”, the second being “mariella28”). I don’t think others would mind if you just used the same account.

There have been more than just 3 for sure.

Your extracurricular activities and community service seem stellar to me; a portion of the decision will rely on your well-roundedness.

The only area in which I would recommend you improve in would be your GPA. While 3.7 is not bad, try and get it higher in your senior year.
