@intparent i mean, I just don’t want to disclose everything about myself on here. But a few ECs I have (being as nonspecific as possible) are vocal singing (huge one, 12+ years), coeditor of local newsletter, hospital volunteering (200+) hours, hopefully will be interning this summer. Those are a few, not including clubs at school.
But it’s totally pointless for the purpose of college admissions, and probably negative for your mental balance and emotional well-being.
Go see your gc on Monday and ask howS/he’d feel if you took fewer AP’s due to Ivies trying to stop the AP arms race and recommending taking fewer. Would you still get the ’ most rigorous ’ check ?
Vocal singing with awards or accomplishments at the state or national level? (National probably being more important for that particular EC at very top schools).
@MYOS1634 Yeah, I kind of wish I had taken a few less, but it is what it is. And considering that I am a junior in my last quarter, there’s nothing I can do anymore
@intparent I guess national? I’ve sung in ensembles that are pretty well known.
You can ease up a bit senior year at least. What’s your schedule looking like?
@MYOS1634 Hmm well this year it’s all APs. Next year it’s going to be AP Gov., AP Macro, AP Physics C, AP Lit., AP Stats, AP Comp Sci., AP Comp Sci Principles, and Anatomy/Physiology.
Which classes did you take this year?
Already, you can drop AP Stats (completely pointless if you already took Calculus BC in terms of college admissions) and Anatomy/Physiology (you already have Physics C for a science). And choose: AP CS Principles, or AP CS A? Personally, I’d pick Principles, it’s an overview of the field and quite interesting (based on the released content).
So, here’s your schedule:
AP Lit
AP CS Principles
AP Gov/AP Macro
AP Physics C
Lunch
…
…
These 2 slots are for you to take the classes that really sound fun and interesting.
Note that if you don’t already have Foreign Language 4 or AP, one of the two should go to your foreign language.
Another possibility: look into dual-enrollment - can you do that?
In that case, I’d take:
Fall Semester
Freshman English 1
General Physics 1
Calculus-based statistics
Foreign Language (level appropriate based on what you’ve already taken in HS)
Freshman Political Science Seminar
(you could take 4 classes, with 2 on MWF and 2 on T-TH, or have a 5th one. But HS seniors aren’t expected to carry a full load - if they can, all the better, but with applications to write you may want to keep that semester balanced)
Spring Semester
A Humanities class of your choice - I’d recommend a Freshman Philosophy class or a cool-sounding Freshman seminar
A Social Science class of your choice - Economics? International relations? Anthropology?
A General Education Math class if there’s one (such as Math&Money, Geometry&Art, Math for Citizenship…)
An Art/Art History/Music appreciation class
An intro to CS class or whatever you didn’t take 1st semester
@MYOS1634 WOW! Thanks so much for all that advice!
This year, I have taken/am taking AP Physics 1/2, AP Biology, AP Lang, APUSH, AP Calculus BC,and AP Art History.
I haven’t gone past French III so perhaps I’ll look into French IV.
I’m curious as to why you say Stats is unnecessary after BC - why’s that?
AP Stats is a class for strong students who can’t/won’t take Calculus. Since you already took it, no need to take a lower-level class. It’s as if you’d completed AP French, then took French 4.
About that => definitely take to increase rigor evaluation.
AP Lit
AP CS Principles
AP Gov/AP Macro
AP Physics C
Lunch
French IV
… <- one fun class of your choice, could be Culinary Arts, or Child Development, or Current Events, or Interpersonal Communication…
Or see if you can dual-enroll (in which case you can take a calculus-based statistics class which, obviously, comes after calculus, unless the basic, algebra-based AP Stats).
@MYOS1634 Oh wow, thank you very much!
oops, *unlike, not unless
