Please CHANCE ME -- No false hope please :)

Currently a Junior, will be applying to JHU. I'm Asian and will be the 1st generation in my family to attend college.

OUT OF STATE applicant.

I took the toughest courses my school had to offer each year.
Freshman and Sophomore Year: Overall weighted average was about a 98.50
Junior Year: Advanced Pre-Calc, AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP English Language, Spanish III Honors.
Currently, my weighted GPA for the Junior year should be around 101-102, depending how I finish.
Senior Year: I plan to take AP Physics, AP English Literature, Spanish IV Honors, BC Calculus, AP Psychology.

SAT: Taken three times thus far.
1st time: 630 CR 720 M 780 WR
2nd time: 640 CR 770 M 720 WR
3rd time: 660 CR 690 M 710 WR

Best Single Score: 2130
Best Super Score: 2210
*Will my inconsistency on separate test dates be a problem for me?

Assume my AP tests for this year aren't phenomenal (I think I may have bombed Chemistry [score:2-3])
--- I think this will have a huge effect considering Science is big at this school.

Sports: Fencing (4 years), Crew/Rowing (3 years) -- Varsity in both

Clubs: President of Asian Culture Club, President of Liberty in North Korea, member of the Newspaper Club

Honor Societies: Math (Vice President), English, Spanish, National (Secretary)

Class President - hopefully four years
*It is it better to be a Student Council VP over Class President? Student Council President is out of the question

Service: Hospital (100+ hours), Science Museum (120 hours)

bummpppp

I think you have a decent chance (High Match --> Reach, just because it’s so competitive). GPA’s fine. SAT’s decent. They’ll expect inconsistencies because every testing environment is different. Props to you for taking it three times…

Good ECs (potential pre-med? = +1, and they can’t possibly know the job descriptions of Student Council vs. Class President unless you tell them, so just sell what you have).

Whether or not the APs will seriously count against you depends on how you did in the classes. JHU would prefer if you didn’t place out of the Intro Chems anyway. AP Lang and APUSH don’t even give you credit.

It would bump your chances if you apply early and/or submit SAT II scores. And if you are pre-med, definitely concentrate on getting as high a score as possible on the AP Calc test. None of the others will give you credit, assuming you are taking AP Physics B (made that mistake already), and I’ve heard that JHU Calc is a pain in the butt to take.

I doubt inconsistency on the sats will matter that much. My first and last sat scores changed by over 90 points total in one section, so I don’t think it’s a big deal. Most colleges superscore anyway. AP scores generally aren’t taken into consideration to a great extent when considering admission, and you have the option to self report. You don’t send the actual scores until when you are admitted. If you did well in those classes, you will be fine. Schools generally use sat2s more in those subjects for admissions purposes.

Class President is fine. There are usually more people in a single class than in student council anyway, so you have greater responsibilities. One thing I’d suggest is if you are serious in the sciences and you want to show that off, to try some sat2s or extracurriculars that show that interest. This is based off your comment “I think this will have a huge effect considering Science is big at this school.” This is assuming you are interested in science. Also just because a school is known for it, does not mean they will focus more on that aspect of your application. They will likely look towards whatever you are likely to select as your course of study as a prospective freshman not just points the school itself is strong at.

Lastly, as TheStudent mentioned, JHU is pretty much a reach for any person. You seem to have a good chance based on what you wrote, but do your absolute best, write killer essays, and the chips will fall where they may. Good luck!

Thanks for all the responses. I’m still looking to hear more points of view if anyone would please like to offer them.
