Your scores will give adcoms a tough time :).

You have a fair chance at Gtown and WUSL because of your achievements and awards (olympiad awards are big deals), and they may disregard your english scores and understand you’re more of a math man. All the others are stretches.

I think you should be a math for georgetown and wustl, but the others are reaches with that act score. but everything else looks good. chance be back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1240896-_-my-last-chance-thread-will-chance-back-_.html

match**…

Hmm, I don’t know much about MIT or Caltech, but I know Chicago looks for a broad spectrum of achievement: science, the arts, athletics. Your subject test scores are incredible, but I know Chicago will also look at the writing and reading on your ACT as well as your essays. Your achievements are phenomenal, but I think your essays will really be the deciding factor. I’d say yes for Georgetown and WashU and maybe for UChicago, MIT, and Caltech. Caltech is extremely small, so I’d say you’d have a better chance at MIT.

Mine please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1269407-chances-princeton-harvard-brown-more.html

I don’t know much about that physics contest, but it seems like a very big deal and, therefore, I think you have very good chances of being accepted to all of these schools disregarding if you need fin aid.

Chance me please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1268956-chance-international.html

I know my ACT score is low. That’s the weak point about my application.

hey! so i dont want to be mean but i know i would want people to be somewhat honest with you on this site even if it means being a little critical. I think MIT & Cal Tech are reaches.

your ECs are a bit weak (even though getting the IPO medal is awesome!) sadly i dont think that medal is a hook / unusual talent. one boy from my hs got it a few years back & he got rejected from MIT/Caltech & most of the ivies but he went to Washu, which I think would be a match for you

Best of luck! Can you please chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1267711-what-schools-should-i-look.html

Everything is good but the ACT score will drag you down… But the silver medal is a phenomenal achievement so it’s a tricky situation you’ve got. And I’m guessing that you’re really looking for a chance in MIT or caltech.

This would be one of those situations in which you have a higher chance in Caltech than MIT: Caltech really looks for the science related honors etc, while MIT does so but looks as the candidate differently as well (say, music or service etc). But that ACT score is quite low. You’ll need to write amazing essays for Caltech and MIT.

Chicago - You’re in, as long as your essays are good
the rest, you’re in.

Chance me back as well please!

I would say you’re 90% on Georgetown, Uchicago and Uwash. If you’re out of state, I don’t see CALtech happening. MIT…with quality writing and standout applications you have a good (65/35) shot.

UChicago and WashU for sure.

^If I get UChicago, I’d be so so so happy.

kdines: Unfortunately, the process is something of a crapshoot. You have about equal chances at Chicago, MIT, and Caltech, and the people saying you’re “in” or “match” at Chicago are uninformed about the admissions process there. Chicago will have a lower acceptance rate than MIT and Caltech during RD (~8% for Chicago, ~10% for MIT and Caltech), and its admissions rate was lower than Harvard’s for EA this year.

There have been comments that “your ACTs will hurt your chances,” but frankly, the people issuing these comments have no idea what they’re talking about. Your ECs are huge accomplishments that outweigh your test scores. Your low GPA might hurt a little since schools want to know that you’d do well in the classes at their schools. But what’s most important is that the colleges you’re applying to know you have direction, and they’ll see that through your essays.

So in conclusion, ultimately, I’d say you have good chances at MIT, Caltech, and Chicago as long as you demonstrate your ambitions and direction clearly in your essays, and as long as you have outstanding letters of recommendation. Georgetown and WashU are a little less selective, but they can still be crapshoots, so you should have no prior misconceptions that you’re “in” at either of these schools.

^ Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. Are you a graduate from UChicago?

Does my SAT-II scores count in UChicago? I have not sent SAT-II scores to UChicago.

The amount that colleges care about the SAT/ACT is dwindling. Your stand-out EC’s should put you a notch above the other applicants, and I think if you have good recommendations and essays, you have as good of a chance of being accepted into these schools as any other applicant. No - I’m not saying that you’re “in” for any of these schools, but you are definitely a force to be reckoned with in comparison to other applicants. If you want, you can retake the ACT and send it to the college. I called U-M (in my case) and asked if I could send the Feb. ACT for their consideration and they said that they would potentially take it into account. I went ahead and signed my ACT score - no matter what it was - to all schools that I am applying to. In my opinion, it doesn’t hurt. If you are willing to pay for the ACT, then they offer “sending” places. Why not take it? The worst a school can do is not look at it. If you do send it, I think it would be wise to notify the school once it is sent.

^Thanks for the comments.

Youre SAT II are amazing! Georgetown would accept you on that basis alone, although, be warned, Georgetown does like you to take subject tests of different subjects, maybe you could try to squeeze in a humanities one? the US history one is pretty easy. MIT is a reach with your ACT score. If its too late to take the ACT, try the SAT. Make sure you get that reading score up! Remember that none of these college are known for a holistic approach to admitting students, so dont worry about your ECs as much as getting your testing scores up!
