So basically... here is my predicament.

I have always really wanted to go to Yale (and so it makes sense to apply there EA), but I do have legacy at Stanford (and Harvard). My question is... what are my chances on getting into Yale early versus getting into Stanford early - how much does legacy count? Do I still have a chance of getting into Yale early, even without legacy? (I am also considering applying to Stanford EA, if it seems like I have no chance at Yale - because I do have legacy at Stanford.)

I know that my test scores are overall considered good, especially at my school, but I have seen scores of other people on this board, and I feel even more insecure about mine now. Are my SAT 2s and APs considered moderate to slightly bad for HYS? Are my 'hooks'/extraccuriculars enough to give me a decent chance? Thanks for replying in advance. I'm just really confused right now and not sure at all what to do.

geez...legacy at stanford and Harvard.

in and in. And yes, you definitely have a chance of getting in Yale SCEA.

I'm confused about the fairly bad school.

Fairly bad as in a bad environment?

The good news is that Harvard doesn't have an early option so you'll get the full legacy benefit there RD.

From what I've seen, legacy counts a lot once you are qualified. These 3 schools will reject most no legacies with your stats (any everyone's) but will accept most legacies with them.

So as long is Harvard works for you, EA Yale.

ivychan: yes, bad environment/not great students. For example, my school never sends kids to Ivies/Stanford , so I don't know how much rank 1 at the school will actually count.

Thanks for the replies everyone! More opinions would also be welcome.

You are in at both Stanford and Harvard, and probably Yale, good luck :)

zomg!!!

we have the same SAT2 scores! (740,750,760) but i took different tests...

apply to yale EA with me :)

just curious, what's your FIDE rating? (or whatever other rating system you use)

Stanford and Harvard seem realistic. I would apply early to Yale I guess, though I doubt it will matter. though if you get in, you can drop your other apps since it's your top choice :p

very strong applicant..... just as a friend, I feel like you can improve your SAT 2 scores easily and actually get 800, so if you have time for it do so. Otherwise yale harvard and stanford should not be really hard to get in for you.

peyman_pezhman: ugh. do you think that raising those SAT 2 scores to 770-800 will really make a big difference? :| I could re-take them, but it would have to be in November, which is awfully soon. I'm good at crash studying and I'm pretty sure I can up my math score by 40-50 points, and hopefully the other two... but my schedule is really hectic right now, and I kind of wanted to focus on my essays this fall.

Do you think it will make a big difference if all my SAT 2s are 30-50 points higher? Or should I just focus on essays and apps right now?

zephyravatar: ~1900 uscf...haha, i know it's not that high, but generally my tournament results are better than my rating would suggest, I think. :P

Bump.... any more opinions on where I should apply early, please????? I need to decide ASAP and I still can't decide whether to apply to Stanford or Yale.

Could anyone estimate my chances of getting into Yale SCEA? Please? :| Thanks!

Your SAT IIs are great, they're not going to be a problem at all. Between your chess, violin and NIH internships, you're ECs are excellent.

IMO you should apply EA to the school you want to attend the most. I'm not big on giving chances, but I think you're going to do very well.

interesting to see another chess player
i find it kinda unfair that you are in the top 50 females regardless of age with a 1900 uscf
im ~2000 and im barely top 30 in my age group
but you have pretty good chances, those legacies will help a LOT
