Reflection
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Not really sure but I believe his
essay was on the weak side. He is dyslexic (since early grammar school). This was briefly
mentioned in the special circumstances section. Also, note that the SAT I scores are the
highest breakdowns out of 3 x taking them (if that matters).
THANKS!

Well I believe he was deferred because of his GPA. If he has a 3.97 Weighted GPA with only one AP course, he must have struggled somewhere. But with his test scores being pretty good, his writing is lacking in act, sat, and as you said, the essays. Those are probably all very hard to do with dyslexia. I feel like you should have really really accentuated that in your essay because that is a very large learning disability. Best of Luck! With dyslexia, I wouldn’t take a chance with my kid, make sure he goes to a school where he will be comfortable to learn with PLENTY of help (either you or help centers).

^just to be clear, Georgia Tech does give extra help, extra time on tests, and priority in registration for kids with learning disabilities. I know a couple.

Thanks for replying. One reason he liked GA Tech is because they have a good resource center for kids with LD. He really hasn’t struggled too much in high school - except for foreign lang. which his counselor encouraged him to take. He’s gotten As - Bs all along. He didn’t want to emphasize the dyslexia too much as he has worked hard to overcome it and he didn’t want to present it as a current problem. But, he will probably always have an issue.

He could emphasize it as a hurdle that has been overcome.

IB is a program that attempts to create a standard course load for students throughout the world. Colleges generally treat IB courses the same as an AP course. The major difference between the two programs is that IB requires you to take 6 classes at the IB-level (each class is 2 years long, so that’s the equivalent of taking 12 AP courses) and IB has non-academic requirements (required creativity, activity, and service hours) and several additional courses (a Theory of Knowledge class and a research project).

It would help if you knew his GT-calculated GPA. You can determine this by posting the classes he’s taken, his grade, and how his school weights classes.

Yeah i completely understand him not wanting to emphasize dyslexia at all. But I think you really should because it really makes them understand that he has overcome SO much. Look at it like a character build.

I think one reason (definitely contributing, maybe even the main one) is the fact that he’s out of state …

I don’t know how the stats are for oos applicants, but I could imagine that your son is ‘borderline’ - as in-state I’d say he would be in!

Another detail that is not visible in your post: how rigorous was/is his course-load? How many APs does his school offer? Your son had only 1 AP through Junior year - not really impressive … (assuming the school offers more).

EML2505 & BanjoHitter - thanks for your posts. I’ve listed his classes and grades below. He doesn;t have gards yet for the current school year. Yes – I thought about the number of AP classes he has taken to date – which is 1 – might have had something to do with his deferred status. This year he’s taking 3. As for the way his school weights grades – I don’t know that. I’ll see if I can find out. Regardless of the dyslexia issue - do you think he has a chance to get into GA Tech at RD? Thanks again.

“3.55 GT GPA That’s low for GT. But his SAT is high”

Thank you BanjoHitter. Can you tell me how you calculated his GT GPA and what they look for number wise? We just got first term report cards and he received As in his 3 AP courses! Yay! A very good sign!

Add those up for all of the core classes (so leave off Ceramics, Visual Arts, Information Technology, etc), add +0.5 for each AP, then divide by the number of core classes.

The average admitted to GT last year was a 3.92, but anything above 3.70 is fine. 3.55 is on the lower side, but it’s not terrible. His Math and CR scores are very good, though. Last year I would say that he’d be deferred then waitlisted because of his GPA, but this year they seem to be very generous with admission, so I think he’ll get in RD.
