• Submitted a plan to school administration for greener technology and compost that was put into action

I developed an eating disorder my freshman year, its climax at the end of sophomore and beginning of junior year. I sought treatment, and my junior year has been comprised of ups and downs. But I am a stronger person through accepting my insecurities. I have had 3 doctor appointments for hours every single week and for that reason have several Bs and less than ideal ECs.

I am really weird. I love love to learn, and I hate how little our school system is focused on actual learning. I read allll the time. I am passionate about the world and people and unity and healing, and have so many ideas and hopes. I’m very outspoken and I love people.

I am really looking for a school in a fairly big city. Other than that, the only other requirement in a school is that it be intellectually stimulating, with lots of interesting diverse people.

How bad will my lack of course rigor and low sat/gpa hurt me?

Your unweighted GPA will be important - weighted GPAs say nothing more than the fact that your school seems to weight things relatively heavily, considering you say you got some B’s.

Seems to me that you have a good shot, however these schools are a reach for anybody. Being an URM will help.

if you get your sat i’s up a little bit you should be fine- congrats on your academic achievements and extracurricular prowess to date

Tell a really powerful story through your essays - given you’re background, they will go a long way.

Definitely take SATs again and maybe the ACT (some people do better on them).

Are you low income? Under 60K a year? If so check out Questbridge. It is for low-income, high-achieving kids, especially good for URMs and First generations. Google it.

You should not be fixating on Brown – or any other single school – but creating a list of schools which have the attributes you are looking for. Sounds like you are willing to travel around the country? This greatly expands your range…but beware of extra transportation costs.

Your SAT Writing was great and even from this short post, you are a good writer.

Can you start putting together a list of preferences, like small school versus big school, geographical areas, etc. Be honest. For example, are you really sure you have to be in a big city?

And…get some real figures about how much you can afford.

Best of luck!

As a first generation, URM, your transcript (grades and courses) are more important than your SATs. Given that, your writing score will impress admissions. your ECs look good to me. Definitely look into Questbridge. You have a great shot at getting into a good school. Good luck.

I’m glad you seem to be conquering your eating disorder and are becoming stronger. Brown is an awesome school, but there are more fundamentally important things, such as your health. I hope you continue to strengthen both in mind and body and fully enjoy exploring and applying to Brown. Best wishes!

TBH it doesn’t seem like you have anything extraordinary on your app. Brown wants people that are creative and different, not just smart kids.

Quote: “I am a female Hispanic Buddhist LGBT going into my senior year at a tiny private Catholic high school in Northern California. Also a first generation college student.” Not different enough?

ECs: (quote)
"-Mock Trial for 2 years

Not creative enough?

You still around sunnylou? This is abundantly creative and different, nevermind the random 17 yo. What is your UW gpa? Look at Wesleyan too. Put a lot of work into a killer essay.

A Hispanic, LGBT, Buddhist at a small Catholic school reaching leadership positions should provide you with great essay material and consideration from many universities.

My only concern is course rigor. Precalc. as a senior & only 3 years of science might stand out. But otherwise, being a URM & a member of the LGBT community (like me!) will definitely help, as will your excellent writing skills. Plus you’ve got a pretty good SAT score. You should look into NYU, I think you might like it; super diverse community, but also ridiculously expensive. Just a thought. Lots of luck!! :)

please don’t use the words ‘weird’ or ‘nerd’ in this context in your app

sorry if that sounds harsh - but, well, i’m trying to help

most everyone else is thinking it, but they wouldn’t dare say it

at least that’s what i think

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of your help. I really appreciate it.
