Well I don’t know what to say, but here goes:
SAT I: 1710. (690 M, 490 CR, 530 W) I know it’s shit. Planning to retake in October.
SAT II: Math Level 2 660. USH 560. (shit)
ACT: N/A
GPA (unweighted): 3.62 (shit)
GPA (Weighted): 3.71 (shit)
UC GPA: 3.95 (good?)
Senior Course: AP Gov. AP Computer Science. AP Stats. Foods. H CA Lit.
AP Tests: APUSH (2) AP Euro (2). APUSH was the one just modified.
Extracurriculars:
Programming Python for 1 summer on my own.
Boogie Boarding with friends.
Volunteer/Community Service:
Attend Halloween Festival ~10 hours
Volunteered at a hospital for over a year. ~220 hours
No Job Experience.
So what UC schools can I be looking at realistically. I know Berkeley is out of the question. UCLA and UCSD is a reach according to a counselor. How about UCSB, UCI, and UCD? I don’t plan on attending UCSC, UCM, or UCR cause those are bad in the CS field.
UCLA is my 1st choice, but if I improve my SAT to 2000+ how much will my chances increase for UCLA?
And Thanks!
What’s your major?
A 2000+ SAT would make UCI a match-high match for you.
As of now I think its a 30% chance.
UCI’s average GPA for engineering and Compsci is rougly 4.02-4.04 so you’re not far off.
Their SATs are above 1900 though so try to bring that up.
With a 2000+ I believe UCLA is still a reach. Their overall GPA average is about 4.1 I believe, with STEM majors being a lot higher.
UCLA/UCSD: Reach (GPA below average and SAT needed for CS around 2100+)
UCD/UCSB: Low Reach/High Match
UCI: High Match
Average UC GPA for UCLA: 4.17 SAT: 2067
Average UC GPA for UCSD: 4.13 SAT: 2035
You have picked a very competitive major, so having average Stats are needed to get into these schools. UCR and UCSC have very respectable CS programs and these would be Match schools for you if you can bump up your SAT score. You should look at a couple Cal states such as SJSU (very competitive/excellent CS program), SDSU, CSULB nd CSUF since the upper tier UC’s look out of Reach.
@gumbymom is right, UCSC and UCR have very solid CS programs. UCM is still new but, gaining momentum each year. I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss
Given your stats those campuses and the CSUs listed above are your best targets.
Another option is CC then transfer but, note those programs are equally selective for transfer applicants.
Good luck
UCB- Reach
UCLA- Reach
UCSD- Reach
UCD- Reach
UCI- Low Reach
UCSB- Low Reach
You need to bring that SAT up to a 2000+ for UCI to be a High Match, and a 2200+ for UCSB to be a Match (UCSB seems to be really forgiving if you have a 2200+/33+ SAT/ACT.)
Wait so, Berkely is a reach if I get over 2000? But SB is a low reach? o.O
I think that Berkeley, UCLA, and probably UCSD are out of reach with your GPA, especially for Computer Science. IF (and it’s a highly unrealistic IF) you broke 2000, then UCSD might be a reach, but the others would still be exceedingly unlikely. Most students who get in have UC-weighted GPAs well over 4.0
Bringing up your SAT to 2000 can be done with a lot of practice tests and dedication, especially because the jump getting from ~1700 to ~2000/2100 is generally easier than breaking pat 2100 into the higher range.
If you rally and bring up those SAT and Subject test scores, it is possible you may receive a supplemental from the UCs, in which you can choose to put down your grades for the first semester of senior year… so don’t forget about those grades! they may end up asking for them…
best of luck!
