<pre><code> Legislators are debating whether or not school should be held year-round. Proponents of this idea to maintain that there are students who will lose important skills over summer that they need the following year. Others say that this will disrupt the normal school cycle and doesn't allow for necessary relaxation time. I believe that school should not be year-around because summer break is a necessity for some, a chance to relax for others, and a period of enrichment for yet others.
Summer break is often a necessity for not only students, but also teachers. Many students use the summertime to hold a job to start covering college costs. This summer breaks are vital for students because it is an uninterrupted time for them to start working towards reducing college debt. On a similar note, students, particularly seniors, use this time to go to extended college visits and prepare college application materials. With year-round schools they will need to worry about the stresses of school and classes, which can take away vital time during this process. Additionally teachers often need the summer breaks. Summer breaks so the only time when they can get a few months off to restructure curriculum for the next year, if necessary. If they have to worry about classes and grading student materials, their time to do this will be drastically reduced. Additionally, teachers often need summer break if they're completing higher education such as a Masters program. Again, year-around school would be an additional stressor that they and the students would face.
Additionally summer break is vital to ensure that students have some time off to relax and do enrichment activities. Many students take a very rigorous courseload and need to destress and recharge for the upcoming school year. More breaks during the year around school won't allow students this adequate time because the courses will continue after this short break. Additionally, many families use summer to visit relatives and vacation, which would be severely hindered by such a drastic change in school schedule.
Furthermore, many students use summer break for enrichment, such as extensive volunteering, gaining work or career experience, or taking classes at local colleges. Shorter breaks with year-round school would be wasted because students can't effectively utilize that time for enrichment, Which often comes to month-long programs and require many hours of dedication. This the year-round school would actually hinder the student by cutting off a chance for them to pursue activities that allow them to be well-rounded.
However, proponents of year-round school provide their own reasons to back up their case. Many claim that students lose skills and knowledge or extended summer break. However, students take entirely different classes upcoming year and they will need to learn many more different skills in the first place. Furthermore, the amount of students who struggle as such with learning are not the majority - they are small population that shouldn't change the rhythm of school and benefits of summer that the majority current experience. Furthermore, for those who struggle with school after break, there is already an option similar to year-round school - summer school. This allows struggling students to have the "year-round experience" and retain knowledge while others use summer in different productive ways. Additionally, having to starter breaks during school would be wasted, as mentioned previously. With these small intermittent breaks, students don't feel like they've had an adequate break from the stresses of school and cannot productively utilize the time with activities that can only work during summertime.
Clearly, because summer is useful, and even necessary in some cases, for the majority of students, it should not be removed in favor of year-long schools. The benefits of summer clearly outweigh any costs.
