My goal here is to get a 3.6+ GPA all for years. I'm a kelley da and planning to major in finance or accounting. this is my schedule, so please tell me if any of my teachers are bad, if any of these classes are really difficult, if these teachers are bad or anything you want. Thanks

Bus-a100 w/ winston
bus-k201 w/ staff
math-m118 w/ staff
bus-c104(x104) w/ paige clark
bus-t175 w/ paul colis
folk-f101 w/ foster

Ratemyprofessors.com and look up “iu grade distributions” on google. Winston teaches all a100. She’s very genuine and seems to have her students best interest at heart. Foster I think gives almost all A’s. Dunno about the rest. Do what I told you for more info.

Looks like a typical DA freshman schedule. Clark has been an inconsistent grader in C-104 the last few years, so just keep that in mind. I am a huge proponent of taking Byron Craig for that class, but I know not everyone can get into it.

Also, are you taking A-100 the first or second 8 weeks? If you’re taking it the first then you’re going to have a weekend in October where you have M118 and K201 Midterms both on Saturday, then the A-100 final Sunday. Granted, if you take A100 the second 8 weeks you have an extra final to study for during finals week. Pick your poison I suppose.

Welson, are you trying to get a 3.7 gpa first semester for automatic entrance to Hutton? If so, I would skip M118 the fall semester and take something much easier. You can always take M118 second semester, or, better still, in the summer at a cc if you don’t want to hurt your gpa. Finite is quirky, and a lot of smart people do not do well in it. The many benefits of getting into Hutton are worth taking an easy schedule your first semester at IU (especially if you are already a direct admit; remember you need to take at least 14 credits) and playing catch up in later semesters at IUB or by doing some classes at cc in the summer (preferably the latter). You only need C’s and above to transfer classes to IUB, and the grade has no effect on your IUB gpa. Some students take three or four Icore prerequisites or gen ed classes in one summer at cc and transfer them to IU, enabling them to take easier classes/lighter loads in Fall and Spring, giving them more time for EC’s.

@bthpmp1 yes i’m trying to get a 3.7 the first semester to get into hutton. at first i was a little skeptical on finite but my adviser told me that I placed into honors finite so i lost those worries. Now i’m unsure again. And this schedule is 14.5 credits. What makes finite so difficult?

Well, a lot of people who test into honors finite have trouble with honors finite. Last Fall’s entering honors class started with 59 students, who I am assuming all tested into finite honors; 18 withdrew, 16 got a solid B, and five got less than that. Any of those grades would not be good for your pursuit of the 3.7. (Two solid A’s and one solid B comes out to only 3.66; so a B in Finite you would have to make up with seven credits of solid A’s-- usually not easy to do). And, if you withdrew, you would have to pick up another class for second eight weeks to get to the 14 credits needed to apply to Hutton. I just think it is an unnecessary risk, considering that it might cost you admission to Hutton, which is a very nice perk if you can get it. Any grade less than A- will hurt you for Hutton.

I know you are not taking honors finite, but all those students who had trouble with S118 probably thought that they would breeze through it, since then tested into it. A lot of smart kids take finite their first Fall semester at IU, because you can’t test out of finite. That makes the competition much tougher than your average class, and add to it that finite is difficult content, which a lot of people just are not “wired” to do. You can always take finite after you get into Hutton. I think the competition might be less in Spring, after a lot of freshman direct admits have taken it (although alot of direct admits probably take it at cc in summer if it is offered where they live). You won’t get penalized for taking it at cc if you want to protect your IU gpa.

Maybe you should forget about Finite, and take the global business analysis and foundations courses. Those two courses will replace the 3 credits of Finite and give you a better first semester to get into Hutton.

Plus, if you’re taking A100 the first 8-weeks, you will have three very difficult departmental exams in the span of 28 hours. In addition, you’ll have the K201 lecture exam in your Monday/Tuesday lab section after the weekend. Some people do it, but I don’t see the reason to if you have other options.

Also, if you test into M211, it’s not a good idea to take it. Last Fall, 1,078 students took M211. Of this number,

258 withdrew
F – 45
D- – 12
C- – 35
C – 112
C+ – 74
B- – 82
B – 137
B+ – 71
A- – 59
A – 108
A+ – 9

738 of these students were freshman, per the Course and Section Enrollment figures. In other words, they were told by their advisors to take M211 and that they should therefore take it. Probably a bad decision for the majority of those freshmen.

You should take global business analysis, and global business foundations. They’re both 1.5 credit new I-core prerequisites. They’ve never been taught before so nobody knows if they will be challenging or not, but I highly doubt it.

I really don’t want to take so many classes that are not worth many credits because i will spend so much time in classes. Is there an easy 3 credit class that would help me? How is microeconomics? or Eng-w131? It says elementary composition so it sounds like basic writing but the average gpa in those classes are about 3.0ish. are there any other really easy electives?

I have no idea about W131. The grade distributions make it look like it really depends on the instructor. A writing/reading class is probably pretty time consuming though.

You could take your natural science. GEOL-G 116 seems to be the easiest.

W131 is not an easy course. I took it in high school, and also was exempt from taking it at iu due to my act english score. Though the class shouldn’t be too difficult in theory, many of my friends at IU last year as well as the year before said that W131 was the worst class they took at IU. Check to see if you are exempt from it, you need a 32 or above on the english portion of the act, and I forget the SAT english requirement.

It’s not that it’s hard, but it’s as bad as other English classes: reading, writing, and analyzing. I also couldn’t seem to get more than a B/B+ on essays.

Some problems with W131 is that grading essays can be very subjective, so many different people teach it, mostly graduate students, so the standards and grading each has varies widely, and teachers also tend not to have much of a track record, with some teaching it only for one year or whatever. Some teachers just don’t give out a lot of A’s.

A health class might be ok, but be aware that Hutton wants 14 academic credits. I know someone who had tennis as her 14th credit and Hutton said no.

That might be a problem. I’ll have to ask them but shouldn’t a gen ed approved S&H class count though? It’s HPER-H263. Or I might take GEOL-G116 but the personal health class might interest me more.
