Please give me feedback for my letter of appeal

My name is xxx, I am a Health Science major. I am writing this letter in hopes that you reconsider my Financial Aid Suspension. I am very fortunate to be attending East Bay. Without Financial aid I do no think it would be possible to get a college education and experience what it takes to become an adult and succeed in life. I know for a fact that East Bay stands behind each and everyone of its students. That is what sold me on East Bay as my college. I truly regret not following the steps that it takes to maintain your financail aid status. While attending East Bay, I thought I could overcome all these hurdles of keeping up with my studies. I know for a fact that in High School, the teachers and counselors chase you, call your parents, email you etc. do whatever it takes to keep you from failing classes. Well, not at East Bay. I now realize its my duty to follow up, answer emails, schedule tutoring sessions, nobody else but me, in order to maintain passing grades. Being the first family member to attend college, nobody knew what to expect, especially me. Moving away from family, having new responsibilities, a whole different living environment, I guess it was a bit overwhelming.

When I received the letter of my financial aid suspension, I was truly shocked and saddened. I really want to continue at East Bay, not only for my education but for myself. I know it is a learning process and my eyes have opened more then you can imagine. This journey that East Bay has given me so far, has had its ups and downs. I don’t plan to be down, because I know and now understand what it takes to push forward and maintain a passing status, when it comes to my grades. I have learned about the many resources there is, the programs, sessions, that are offered to help me in my journey to succeed, not only in education but also emotionally and mentally. I myself felt that if I went to seek help I was a failure, but I have now learned I was only making myself smarter. There is no such thing as failing, only learning. That is what I am told.

In writing this letter I hope you reconsider my financial aid suspension and give me that opportunity to show you that I am ready and willing to give East Bay 100% of myself and more. I want to strive and become a well-educated Latina woman something that is long overdue in my family. I know I will succeed and work hard for everything that is put before me. Thabk you for taking the time and consideration.

Sincerely,
xxx

It is too long. State the problem briefly. List specific steps you have taken to remediate the issue (ex. seeing tutors daily, going to counseling center, going to writing center/math center, seeing professors regularly etc.). IMO just saying you want to stay in school and will do better isn’t enough. I do hope things work out for you.

Dear Financial Aid Committee,
My name is xxx; I am a Health Science major. I am writing this letter in hopes that you reconsider my Financial Aid Suspension for Spring 2016. While attending East Bay, I thought I could overcome all these hurdles of keeping up with my studies. During Winter quarter I hit a few spots dealing with a death in the family, and missing home, but that doesn’t make up for not doing well in my Math 805 class. I am seeking to make changes and I know I am capable of making academic progress and getting a higher GPA.

My new academic plan:

I discovered the program offered at Cal State East Bay called, SCAA. They provide free tutoring in math. I will no longer hesitate to get help when I don’t understand certain problems. I will also make appointments with my professor to ask for help. I also think that when I need to talk to someone I can go to an advisor to talk to him or her about the problems I’m going through. I’m fully devoted to doing my very best and succeed toward academic excellence

My family is unable to contribute money toward my education, which has me dependent on my financial aid. I am very fortunate to be attending a Cal State School and being the first one in my family to be in college. I am determined to do whatever is necessary to achieve my goals toward my education. Without financial aid I would have to discontinue my studies at Cal State East Bay. Please allow me another chance to show that I can be a better student and achieve better academic excellence.
Sincerely,
xxx

This is pretty good now. Had you been on probation after the fall quarter or did you just have one bad winter quarter? Because if you were doing poorly for two quarters they may feel that they have already given you a chance. Good luck!

Try this:

Dear Financial Aid Committee,

My name is xxx, a Health Science major. I am writing this letter in hopes that you will reconsider my Financial Aid Suspension for Spring 2016. While attending East Bay, I thought I could overcome several hurdles in the way of keeping up with my studies. During Winter quarter, I hit a few spots including dealing with a death in the family, but I am aware that these do not make up for performing poorly in my Math 805 class. I am seeking to make changes and I know I am capable of making academic progress and obtaining a higher GPA.

I recently learned about the SCAA tutoring services offered by Cal State East Bay and plan to make use of these services often. Additionally, I have already begun to schedule appointments with my professor. I am fully devoted to doing my very best and succeed toward academic excellence

My family is unable to contribute money toward my education, which has me dependent on my financial aid. I am very fortunate to be attending a Cal State School and being the first in my family to attend college. I am determined to do whatever is necessary to achieve my goals toward my education. Without financial aid I will have to discontinue my studies at Cal State East Bay and enroll at _____ community college, which will make for a difficult 17-mile commute (?) and an extra course load to make up for nontransferable credits (?).

I would be happy to schedule an appointment with the Financial Aid office (?) to discuss this request further. Please feel free to reach me at: __@.com or (999) 999-999.

Sincerely,
xxx
